You can click on search, old hat search and enter the URL you're about to post. Then TTLG will tell you that it has been posted twice before, and you don't need to post it again...
I disagree. While the ordinary search function should be used before posting, the reposting of old hat, especially something with entertainment value, shouldn't be restricted at all. With the loads of new members this community has all the time, old hat can easily be brand new to a lot of people, myself among them.
To be a bit more rude, just because you are a veteran internet geek who has seen everything before, does not mean that everybody has. And it does not earn you any super-special TTLG tokens to point out that someone posted something similar in ye good olde days, way before many of us had even begun ghosting these forums.
And while we're on topic, I don't get this "Its been posted before, lets flame the poster" thing people got going here. Is it seriously expected that new members scour the old threads in order to find a lot of meaningless stuff, or are the old boys simply too revered and arrogant that they cannot possibly be subjected to something they maybe saw several years ago? Or are the people of CommChat simply bored asshats who take any opprtunity to kick others so they can feel good about themselves?
I guess this is what constitutes a rant...

Yes, and it's old hat. ;)

I agree with the "not anyone has seen it..." part. But that doesn't mean it needs a new thread. Search and if you think people need to see it again, re-animate the thread. It's better to have 1 than 2. Having 2 or more threads totally clutters up the forums, makes the search function a pain and will get you flamed :ebil:
It is like organising your stuff on your harddrive (or in your life). If you save another copy (slightly different) of each file everytime you use it, you will have a hard time to find the right one when you need it.
Besides, those in need of old hats (they don't have to be bad at all) can browse forever here on TTLG. There's no law that says you're only allowed to see new stuff.
And I'm still waiting for an explanation what ZOMG and fizziks means. That's where the fuel for the flames starts, using language that my dictionary doesn't know.

So, someone still has to run a search every single time prior to posting a new thread? Gee, what fun.

If it's link spam, yes. However, old gat ravings and getting into stupid metadiscussions about them is also verging on the point of spam, so just everybody be cool this is a robbery

ZOMG = (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zomg) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zomg
Fizziks = mildly comical intentional misspelling of "physics"
Sounds kinda stupid when you have to spell it out for someone who obviously understands, but just wants to be a dick. Considering there are thread titles like "Argghh! teh zombies be in my head!" I didn't think it was completely out of line. But then I'm new.
Apologies for reposting a link that has been done before. If you wish me to perform seppuku, let me know. If you need me to
define seppuku, I can do that too.

He didn't mean to be a dick. He meant to be an evil.

You don't HAVE to do anything other than obey forum rules. However, if you want to avoid looking like an idiot, there are some recommended procedures!

I think we should consider that the old hat search is quite slow... or is it just me?
tungsten on 9/6/2006 at 15:05
sanity, you got it right.
Hier, thanks for explaining the zomg thing. I did NOT understand that because we have a kind of "real language" island here at TTLG, and I don't frequent too many other places. You're right, the I got the physics part, I was just annoyed. Thanks for clearing it up, I'll try to be nicer in the future.
About the argument that there are other threads with idiotic language titles: that's not really an argument. Others commited seppuku too, and you don't. (not that I want you to).
Oh, and welcome to TTLG.
And no, you don't have to explain seppuku to someone living in Japan :cheeky: but thanks for the offer.
