We are most definitely not "commies". The Canadian Liberals are pretty much about the same place that we are.
No, because the Canadian Liberals actually have a reasonable hope of being elected someday.

I'll have to relay this sad news to my mother, father, aunt and uncle, all of whom serve on the ruling Liberal Democrat administration in Liverpool :(

Ooh, first Liverpool, then the world, eh?

I'm finding that hard to believe. The Federal Liberals are only a bit left of centre, and are mostly concerned with the Status Quo.

What "SD" hasn't told you is that almost every single MP returned by a Merseyside Constituency in the 2005 election (the recognised process by which parties are elected to govenment) was Labour.
A breakdown of "The North West" (Liverpool and Greater Manchester, etc) can be found (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/region_5.stm) here.
I assume, however, that Liverpool *is* Lib Dem controlled at a local level.

This is because what Liverpool people are most terrified of is another Conservative government, and because our undemocratic non-proportional electoral system makes voting for a third party counter-productive, voters naturally give their vote to Labour. Something I can totally understand, for what it's worth.
At local level, however, they are more than aware of what side their bread is buttered on.

Assume? Did you not wonder why it no longer had the highest tax or the worst services in the country? ;)

(*hopefully this addition retains the meaning)
Mm, certainly true.
Which is why a third party is extremely unlikely to control parliament in the present circumstances.
Since the system shows absolutely no sign of changing whatsoever, you might even say that there was no "reasonable hope" of said third party being elected in the near or even mid future. An optimistic one, maybe.
But I didn't really stop by to discuss Lib Dem election prospects. I was just adding a broader spectrum of information - because to the casual, non-UK reader your response would make it seem as though the Lib Dems were somehow unchallenged in Liverpool at both nation and local level. When in fact, at national level, FOR WHATEVER REASON they barely got a sniff.
