When a weapon breaks, you hold Right, select another weapon from a mini-list (not full inventory), then let go of Right, done. This keep the immersion break to a minimum, and can be done very quickly. There are lots of good user interface designs like this.
I'm loving the game, having a blast, solving things the "wrong" way all the time, great fun!

I'm enjoying the game, but having a lot of problems with the controls. My poor middle-aged mind can't seem to consistently distinguish between the various buttons.
However, I am having a great deal of fun. The sky islands are a tad underwhelming, but the abyss exploration is some of the best fun I've had in a Zelda game ever. It reminds me of my first time with Dark Souls, when I thought that Ornstein and Smough were the final boss and the Tomb of the Giants was an optional area, and explored the entire place in the dark. I've been enjoying catching intriguing glimpses of distant landmarks in the darkness, then trying to find my way to them, and frequently getting in over my head.
The discrete and tightly designed nature of Zelda dungeons have long been an obstacle to the coherence of the game worlds, up through Skyward Sword. Breath of the Wild gave the dungeons a reason for existing, but Tears of the Kingdom is the first time that the underworld feels like a place that coexists with the overworld.

Tears of the Kingdom is not consuming my idle thought processes in the way I'd hoped it would. I play it for a little while most days, and there are occasionally some moments of wonder, but my general impression of it is that it's kind of tedious to pitter patter all over this enormously enormous world in search of random whatever to do.
I often feel torn between wanting to strike out and explore and worrying that if I just stumble across every major event by chance instead of through the official quest channels, it won't feel like anything I've done was meaningful. But either way there isn't a great sense of purpose even with the main quests, of which I've completed the bird one only so far. The feeling I'd hope for is an urge to push forward and tackle the rest, but instead it's more like, "Well, I guess I'll walk this way for a while," until I end up in a deep, winding cave that takes me 15 minutes to explore, and the reward is a ruby and a few traveller swords.
I dunno. It's almost too sandboxy in a way. But in a slightly different frame of mind it might also be the best thing ever, so I'm just biding my time until it really clicks and I get addicted. It's almost more a game to be admired for its dedication to its concept than to really be enjoyed at this point. That said, I am enjoying the greater number of NPCs, that lend more of a living feel to the world.

I'm loving my time with it, I have like 70% of the Depths mapped out by now. Busy upgrading my battery so I can ride my hoverbike longer and longer. I'm not too worried about triggering some story event by accident, because it's a Nintendo game, so the story is gonna be... whatever.
btw it turns out that the big bad guy of the game, The Demon King, is actually Ganondorf. You never see it coming.
