Guess I have to spell it out for y'all.
I'll return the favour and reply unnecessarily and sanctimoniously in kind.

We have an unusually nice, tidy, low-bandwidth forum here. No avatars, no image sigs, strict image size limits, et al. What ignatios has revealed is a way to
embed Flash movies in a thread.
Embedding directly streaming
Flash movies (italics for emphasis!) would no doubt result in the poster having their post moderated as they would if they posted 1600x1200 jpegs of rotting intestinal tract or links to (
www.somethingtodowithfreeipods.com)
What YouTube have produced is a nice, tidy, low bandwidth way to let people see the first frame of a movie so they can judge whether or not they'd like to see the rest of it. As an alternative to blindly following a link to something that could be hideously uninteresting and/or disappears into a sea of advertising, it works rather well and hardly qualifies as stupid.

ZB has a point
what say we just ban the cunt, then he'll never have to worry about what appears on TTLG

So... what, links to YouTube are okay, but all others are forbidden? What about other streaming Flash content?
With a gigantic image, its gigantism is immediately apparent. But with an embedded Flash object, how can you tell short of launching a bandwidth monitor? Broadband users can barely perceive the difference between streaming Flash and non-streaming, but for dialup users embedded Flash can totally clog up their connection.
Faced with the prospect of having to evaluate every embedded Flash object on a case-by-case basis, one would think the admins would instead opt to simply disallow them.
And wow, CommChat has gotten a lot more mouth-frothy than I remember. Granted, it's the usual gang of lackwits shooting off, but still... yeesh. At least OnionBob finally learned to talk.

God, can you not even conceive of the existence of degrees? What part of this entire scenario was not already covered by the the policy "as long as it's not big and invasive, that's cool" before you started this futile tangent? Do you think anyone here, let alone a moderator, is incapable of telling the difference between a tiny single-frame non-auto-starting flash loader and HAY GUYS PEEP THIS HOMESTAR EPISODE?
Just have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

Personally, I think YouTube is horrifically annoying and will continue to think so until they incorporate a fucking VOLUME SLIDER into things. I love the content, I have found loads of amazing things on YouTube... BUT JESUS CHRIST WE NEED MORE THAN ON OR OFF WHEN IT COMES TO VOLUME.
Because they aren't table-breaking and don't have to pre-load, I find little offensive about embedded YouTube videos. That said, I will probably gleefully ban anyone who starts using them as the new Image Post, because that's just stupid.

Right now other threads in this forum are taking less than 3 seconds to load on my system (1Mb ADSL). This thread is taking 32 seconds. Heaven help people on dial-up!
TF on 14/4/2006 at 19:42
This thread takes 2 seconds to load just like any other for me and I've got 50k cable.
Also re: volume, I found it pretty amazing that volum control was overlook'd, it's less annoying if you have keyboard volume buttans, though you still have to RECALIBRATE after watching a video.
ffox on 14/4/2006 at 19:56
Page 1 is now taking 12 seconds to load, page 2 less than 1 second. (I'm talking about loading fully - ie until the "working in background" pointer clears.)
Edit: That's with Opera. IE is much quicker. Can't test with Mozilla because that needs a plugin and I don't understand the download/install intructions.

If it bothers you so much, instruct your browser to not display flash unless you want to see it. (In Opera, press F12 and click disable plugins, for Firefox, get one of the plugins.)

It is, in fact, impossible to visibly distinguish between a Flash movie that's only displaying a start prompt, and one that's displaying a start prompt
and preloading itself in the background.
