If you do get around to Bitches Brew (and even though it doesn't strictly meet your criteria, you should, because it's amazing), listen to Pharaoh's Dance as well as the title track. They're where the money is.

Magma - Kohntarkosz.
I can absolutely guarantee you've never heard anything like it. There are vocals, but they're treated as instruments (actually, the band usually sings in its own invented language).
(
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=646) Part I is streaming here legally (scroll down), although part II is the real kicker. This isn't the best selection, but Weidorje, La Dawotsin, and "Iss" Lansei Doa especially, are also pretty good.
Youtube has more fun links:

I.......LIVE.......AGAIN
Revival of an old thread. But I started it so I`m allowed to :p.
I`ve been coming back to this thread every once in a while to download a few more of the recommended instrumentals. Some have been good, some not so good.
Listening to Miles Davis - Pharoah Dance, as I type this. Very nice music, though I`m assuming that Miles Davis is a classical artist by nature. The Beach Boys track was excellent. I had no idea they`d done an instrumental piece. Makes me wonder if the Beatles ever did any. Would sound fantastic. Or even Jimmi Hendrix.
Muse - The Gallery is not a instrumental, that song has words throughout it. Same goes for all of the last few Nine Inch Nails songs mentioned.
I have to comment on Swallow by Placebo again (the proceeding part of Hongkong Farewell). That song really makes an impression. Very freaky ass song. To have a song all about a guy who suffers from severe stuttering. Very bizare tune.
That Jethro Tull version of Bouree was quite good also. Nice Jazzy ring to it. Eagles - Journey of a Sorcerer, and Alice in Chains - Whale and Wasp, I enjoyed immensely also.
If anyone else knows of any instrumentals not already mentioned in this thread then feel free to post em :D.

You mentioned jimi hendrix, he has a number of instrumental tracks, but if you really want to hear him at his peak, get hold of "Drivin' South", from the BBC Radio One sessions. It was essentially a one off jam, just jimi going for it.

Khanate - Torching Koroviev
Electric Wizard - Master of Alchemy
Black Sabbath - Supertzar

how bout instead of just listing tunes, actually saying a little about them to give people an idea what they are in for?
Gillie on 12/2/2008 at 13:11
There are many Instrumentals I love oldies Including
"Albatross"
"Laguna sunrise" Black Sabbath
"White Summer/Black Mountain side" Led Zeppelin (Jimmy page)
"Samba Pa Ti" Santana

Drivin South was very good.
Jusal: 2/3 of those I cant find. But listening to Supertzar as I type this. Very old school 80s/early 90s heavy metal sounding. Love it :).
[edit]
Who does Albatross?
[edit 2]
Nevermind, worked it out. Fleetwood Mac. Very nice tune. As is both of the Black Sabbath instrumentals.

Very well, here's something about the two songs you couldn't find.
Well, (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Wizard) Electric Wizard sounds kind of Black Sabbath-ish, but with a fuzzier sound. It's Stoner/Doom metal.
Master of Alchemy is one of those songs by them where everything just goes together perfectly without the need for lyrics. I love the guitar in it.
(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khanate_%28band%29) Khanate is simply put, sick. It's was an experimental Drone Doom metal/Noise band. If you've ever heard Sunn O))) that might give you somekind of a picture what listening to Khanate is like, except that it's even gloomier and most of the time the vocalist sounds like he's trying to scream his lungs out.
Torching Koroviev is their shortest and (as far as I know), only track that could count as instrumental in some ways. Although the track does have some tortured sounding panting and faint growling in the backround it lacks of any lyrics (as in speech).
