what do YOU go for? Not 'what's the best' but what do you go for.
Me, I used to go computer electronic and lockpick with a weapon slot.
Now I bolster a weapon skill up to advanced and invest in lockpicking, bolstering computers and then electronics.
After all, why bypass a switch when you can blast it open with your gep gun, or simply enter the code, as a way to find it out is so easy in the beginning.

I usually go that way: Computers (maybe even two levels in Computers, I love to hack these computers and read the mails there without having too much trouble with time. Otherwise, a single level would be more than enough), Electronics, a weapon skill and after that, Lockpicking.
About the starting skills, are you supposed to be able to downgrade standard weapons, earn the additional points (1350 I believe) AND still have Trained Standard Weapons at the beginning of the game?

With my typical character archetype, I would invest one level in Computers, Lockpicking, Electronics, and Low-Tech (Melee) Weapons. Or sometimes Rifles.

you can decrease the pistol skill to untrained, which is what I do.
I set a weapons skill I want to do into advanced. That gives me enough for lockpicking. Then as I go on in the game, it's computers, and then electronics that I get myself up to 'trained' in.
Suddenly that pistol or assault rifle isn't usless. :P

When I found this slipup, I took hideous advantage of it in my last game. I lowered my Pistol stat at the beginning for the extra 1,350 points, then poured it back + extra for Advanced Pistol skill. Hoarded the remaining points ... so by the time I leave Liberty Island I have:
1) Enough points to boost my Pistol skill to Master ...
2) Stealth Pistol from ex-General Carter
3) 3 Weapon Accuracy Mod (If you know where to look)...
4) Scope Mod ..
Ta-da!; a 95% Accuracy Stealth Pistol with Scope (~95% and above means no wavering when zoomed in via scope, unless you took head/arm dmg) to use so early in the beginning (end of 1st mission and debrief)! Makes the next few missions cakewalk conflictwise. The bad thing is that I have to slowly gather up points in Electronics, Lockpicking and Computer ... of course, picking up the multi-purpose GEP door blaster from Paul helps to overcome that.

I go for Electronics, Lockpicking anc Computers. Then I THINK its pistol but it may be rifle...
I generally just wander about with the Tranq Crossbow on the first level anyway - the Prod runs out to quickly.

At least the GEP has a non-lethal use when used applied to bots (point at highly armored foe, and apply liberally :ebil: ). The sniper rifle is only good for taking down squishy targets (until you max out rifles, then you can use it on doors and cameras and turrets), and Paul doesn't like it when you do that.

And Paul with his middle force approach doesn't even imagine in his worst nightmares than you could actually use the GEP gun against living targets. :) If that idea was to occur to him, he would never even mention this weapon in your presence.
