I agree with demagogue
Having it being some call or event to present tribute for beloved author is fine as long as it's not rated.
For contest, we must encourage creativity and the rating works to motivate author to push their ideas of design, narrative and gameplay to their best.
If it had to be authors inspired style only, better it be on a contestant's choice but tbh, I'm not sure if it's possible to easily mimick all authors styles.
Imitating the style of Lady Rowena is for example possible because she has a strong design personnality.
Now ask me about Lady Jo who was an important person in the French community but more in term of community management than Fan Mission (she did only one or two missions iirc and never alone)
As for the sense of respect, I also consider it rather respectful to mimick an author style, even gone.
As we all know nobody will do it on the purpose to do style appropriation or to mock them, but definitely an hommage for their legacy, even if the author doing the mimick do it badly - the intention matters the most for it.
Like Random_Taffer, if I had to die tomorrow, I would definitely be happy if some authors do Fan Missions that could have been mine, as it'd means my work inspires enough to worth a new contribution in my style.
(And I would wish good luck to the author doing so because my style has no specific visual hehe)

thank you so much firemage, you have the same thinking as i do when i made this post
its all about remembering how amazing the fan mission authors we lost truly are
my vote for future fan mission contest is
1.escape
2.traveling long distance/journey
3.prequal to thief 1
4.post thief 3
5.in the style of = can be anyone as i dont want to make people feel they have to pick authors we lost

I briefly parodied your first mission in One Man's Trash.

Oh, I would love prequels to T1 or missions exploring events after T3. I also fancy murder mysteries, so I wouldn´t say no to these either.

The idea's man back at it again with another banger

I'd play a mission called “Return to Rowena's Curse: Rowena's Ghost Gets Her Revenge in Style™” in a heartbeat. Someone please make that happen

How about a contest for missions that contain memorials or tributes of some sort to the lost luminaries? I've seen that done once or twice, specifically for Lady Rowena, and I thought it very touching.

also a "deep" contest would be nice as a long time ago there was a mission i think called "the hole" and the idea was great but needed to be way deeper
also the mission with those little Viking guys was amazing as you got to go pretty deep but not deep enough
i would love to see a mission start on ground level and get progressively deeper and deeper though the mines, caves, pagan underground, lost civilizations, etc, must have massive exploration, some puzzles, parkour jump puzzles, object pushing to get to high area's, etc, random views to the outside but you can access it :P = been done before with amazing effect
and please add burrick as i feel they not given the attention as they should, also in underground area's you can do cave paintings, carvings, etc, water streams, and yes you have to have a cray beast area, maybe they can be allies in mission, bring the kershok into game, and of course we will need some dryad's on missions also, and necromages got to have zombies in mission = but we should get constantines sword = the one that can destroy zombies, cant forget the ice crystal caves one of my fav moments in thief 1, tons of secrets/paths
a great example would be "choose your own adventure books" where anything can happen once you a certain path
another idea is a retelling of the book called "the maze" where you have to find clues to pick the right path to win, some paths are loop rooms and some are trap rooms and one path is the right way and coming back to start you have to find the correct path back not same as getting there, cool idea and could be done in thief more a thinking persons type of mission
another idea is a fan mission where its about most distance traveled, basically its up to the author to come up with a way to make it seem like you playing forever and always keeping the views different, i was once talking to brethren and he said it would be possible to make a path with area's that make it so it don't lag from such far distance but at the end have a invisible warp to the next lane of traveling, meaning you could grid out lanes in the biggest box and have each lane separate but a warp to each lane making it so you could literally travel more then any other mission ever made and have each lane separate from the others so the lag would not be an issue, for example i walk down a long path, with curve in places so not to much of the lane is showing for player so not to bog down the gameplay/lag, maybe fences, gate, etc at at the end is a invisible warp taking you to next lane of game play, no way to skip lanes
would be interesting so see how much walking a mission could offer, maybe a massive hiking trail with paths, rivers, mountains, rest stops, etc

I remember there was a vertical contest but I don't remember the missions. I'll have to go play them again to refresh my memory. :) Anyway that's what I thought of when you mentioned "deep" contest.

yes vertical was amazing but think opposite direction for deep going down, down, down, more of the carve method of map making i think, does dromed offer the carve out method for map making or just fill in the space type?
