the game is so beautiful, why would you want to ruin it by making it blurry?

WAHT?
HDR, combined with specular lighting kicks major behind in this game

Renzatic's screenies just made me grin. Awesome.:thumb:

Yeah, I think HDR is fantastic - you really tell the difference without it, unlike some graphics-card-selling special effects.
The framerate change is aggravating - I can run the game at 1152xwhateverthehellitis, max settings on everything from shadows to object distance, and it runs fine...but then in a few fights it drops seriously - and this is on a system that, when auto-detecting stuff, the game set things to 'ultra-high detail'. It got to the point where I went to 1024x768, lowered the fade on various things, disabled grass shadows (which I barely noticed anyway)...but overall runs fine and looks beautiful.

Anyone here running Oblivion below their LCD's native resolution? How does it look so far? I haven't had the guts to lower my rez as of yet.
I've been running Oblivion at my LCD's native rez (1280x1024) and have most shadow options turned down or off. I also have object fade set to half. Everything else such as distance options is maxed. It runs decent the majority of the time. It's usually around dusk when things slow to a slideshow. For example, my FPS was totalled when I did the Killing Field quest around dusk time. I guess having yourself with two friendly NPCs fending off multiple goblin attacks during dusk is too much for my system. :(
I am really hesitant to lower graphic options since the environments are absolutely beautiful i.e. looking at HDR enhanced sunlight coming through the pillars of an Ayleid ruin is stunning.

Yup. Though I don't like the fact I can't use AA along with HDR, I just can't bring myself to turn it off now that I've seen it in action.
Dirty Brute, (
http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=358235) this thread might help you out a bit. I think going into the .ini and setting "bPreemptivelyUnloadCells" to 1 achieves a similar effect.

I run at 800 by 600 on an LCD of the same resolution, and it isn't that bad. If my old CRTs hadn't died I'd have got one of them out instead, but my LCD scales pretty well. I'd just try it, and use AA to smooth the edges. Perfectly pleasant to look at, and playable. In the end it's best just to accept Oblivion is a computer-devouring beast and compromises have to be made for a decent experience.

what is up with all the people who are saying "i have hdr enabled. hdr is awesome! i can't believe anybody plays without it. ramble ramble. but my framerate sucks, i can't figure out why!" ...
call the WAAAAAHMBULANCE, cuz i don't care.

Ok, after much tweaking and some slight compromising, this is what I ended up with:
(on a P4 3.00, 1 GB RAM, GF 6600GT)
At 1280x1024, textures large, everything turned up except grass, which I turned off (that was a small loss, but oh well); int and ext shadows at medium, all other shadows off (not that big a deal, really); specular distance at about, say, 8 out of 10; bloom on, AA off, all water effects on and high.
It looks beautiful and it runs fine. And I'm fairly demanding about graphics. If you have a machine like mine and are hestating, don't. You'll be more than happy with what you can do. Then when you upgrade, as one does, you'll have an excuse to play it again. :)

Well, LF, I've tried upping the resolution, and it seems ok in some areas, but in the forest areas, especially during combat, things get a bit tricky.
Using fraps to benchmark I got min/max/avg of 0/62/13.606 - not particularly great. Walking around in a relatively small internal area got me 11/32/19.355.
Dropping to 1024 by 768 got me up to 30 average in the same internal area (although I did have my face to the wall a few times) and 18-20 outside (in the city and round the imperial isle). A 6600GT does quite well though, considering its age.
