I think those two tests miss the real problem with Oblivion : the processor!
I have an X800XL and I play with Bloom, 6xAA at 1280x768. My minimum FPS outdoor, with heavy foliage, is around 15 FPS, most of the time between 20 to 25. The interseting part is if I turn off bloom, AA and drop the resolution to 800x600, I get only 2 or 3 FPS more. To me, it means that my Athlon64 3000+ is the bottleneck.
Also, this minimum of 15 FPS are when there is no AI. When fighting, the FPS can easily drop below 10 FPS. For example, in quest where I had to defend a farm against several goblins, I think I made the whole fight at 5 or 6 FPS. when the fight was over, with all the bodies still on the ground, my framerate went back up to 15 FPS.

Funny... I just read a thread on the Elder Scrolls Forum where people give their framerate and, except for a few "strange" results, everyone, no matter what computer they have, seem to have about the same framerate.
I think I need a tinfoil hat...

my performance is similar although i probably get an average outdoors of 25. dropped to 10 or 12 at that farm. although in some fights at kvatch when there was more enemies on screen @ the same time, i was dropping to about 5fps :(

I turned all the settings down to minimum except draw distance (at max) and it's running beautifully at just below recommended specs. I'm saving the higher settings as a treat for when I upgrade :)

The new comp is basically set up. Still have some tweaking to do here and there and alot more to install programwise, but it's up and running. But based on basic benchmark scores like Aquamark and 3DMark05, this comp absolutely stomps my old one into the ground.
As for improvments in Oblivion? Well, I do have some things set higher than what I did with the 9800Pro, like the shadow and draw sliders set to about medium and the grass is set a little thicker, but I kept everything roughly the same. So...framerate difference? And yes, this is with bloom in lieu of HDR.
Like I said, I still have a whole boatload of tweaking to do, so keep that in mind. But on first glance I'd say the game doesn't scale well at all. It's probably why all the low end people were so surprised at how well it performed, while the high end people were so disappointed.
But HDR is rather awesome.
Edit: Dropping down from 1280x720 bloom to 1024x768 HDR and setting the grass thickness from 100 to 120 practically doubled the framerate.

i wasn't impressed with HDR in far cry or Oblivion. the only HDR i was even mildly impressed by was in HL2: Lost coast, and that's only at the beginning when the sun reflects off the sand -- but they put that part at the beginning for a reason.
it's another gimmick just like bloom (which looks terribly ugly and blurry) and anti-aliasing (which also makes things blurry) ... don't you guys know that JAGGIES ARE BEAUTIFUL. i miss the days of 320x240 software rendering. good old Descent and Doom... now THOSE games had good graphics! :thumb:

I have these specs:
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz
GeForce 6600GT
1024 RAM
Would i be able to run the game on the 1024x768 resolution and how well? (If at all)
My friend runs the game with basically no lag with far worse specs than that, although I'm not sure what resolution. I do think that the 6600GT is a lot better than IO is giving it credit for, though.

I did try the farm quest again, and yes, this time my framerate was better (about 10 FPS). I guess that's why some people talk about memory leaks. I think I need to figure out if there is an option for the tdt console command that give me some stats about memory usage so I can guess when to reload the game. Does anyone know ?

i upgraded to windows XP last week... so i have about 1/2 my playing time in 2k and 1/2 in XP ... i have noticed in XP, for some reason, whenever an audio/video codec is in use, it opens up a little icon in the system tray. whenever i exit oblivion, there are usually several dozen of these icons, apparently they are the mp3s , i don't know if the codecs are still staying resident in memory even after each song is over or what -- but that is a possible bug.
the reason i think this is because in some of the tweak threads on the official oblivion forums, i saw something about some codecs having problems ........ but i forgot the link to that thread now and i haven't really cared in a few weeks :erg:

Damn, you're pretty harsh on all the cool graphical effects, aren't you?
Okay, after doing a load of tweaking and fiddling, I've managed to get the game running at a nice 30 FPS with HDR on out in the usually comp-bogging forest areas.
To me, HDR is far, far, far preferrable to bloom in every way imaginable. It's (olol) a night and day difference. It isn't as obtrusive, during midday and night you barely even notice it, but dusks and dawns are a completely different story.
I took a few dramatic shots of a dusk in the great forest just north of Skingrad...as usual, I'll let em speak for themselves.
