oh man.... i just wrote a huge long spiel about how you wasted a bunch of money on this because you wouldn't be able to upgrade your graphics card any further since you were locked into agp... but then i looked at the mobo and see that it is dual pci express and agp ...
but it still begs the question .... ??? why did you get the agp? a pci express 7800 gt can be had for the same price as a GS, and it has 4 additional pixel pipelines. the gt will give you roughly 10-15 performance increase over the GS.......
???
Not to offend Dirty_Brute here since he seems so stoked about me getting a GS...but as I was driving down the road earlier, reflecting on my purchase, I kinda thought the same thing.
I'm gonna chalk it up to the fact I was in a hurry, and I was comparing the price between a GS against a GTX...the GT didn't even enter my mind til after the order was processed. Since I have to order a heatsink anyway, hopefully I can give Newegg a call before they ship it out and see if they can switch the graphics card when they change the order.
But on a plus side, it's not exactly a shabby performer. And when I upgrade again, I'll more than likely be able to sell an old AGP card to one of my friends than I would a PCI-e.
Edit: Sent an email to Newegg. I've switched from a 7800GS to a 7900GT. This is what happens when you rush through the ordering process without doing enough research. Oh well, it isn't the first time I've done something completely boneheaded...I'll just consider it another lesson learned.

X-Fi Extrememusic

Oblivion is a tough one to have good number of frames in.

JOLLY GOOD SHOW!!! you should be very happy with that. i like my GS although i must admit i
do wish oblivion performed a little better.... but a lot of it is due to my athlon XP slowing it down.. everything else though (FEAR, Far Cry, Quake 4) is quite great :D
glad i could help!

Awesome! Welcome to the 7800 GS club. :thumb: Remember that these are very overclockable. :)
what is your oc? mine is running at 489 core 1380 memory .... i can't seem to push the memory any further than that, it never tests stable in coolbits, so it won't let me. max i have gotten was 1400 but i get slight artifacts in fear
Dirty_Brute on 31/3/2006 at 20:01
The OC for my 7800 GS is at 450mhz. The memory is at 1350ghz. Seems stable so far. I ran Fear at 1280x1024 with max settings (soft shadows/FSAA turned off) with an average of 45fps. Of course, I do have a 21mm nine-bladed Silverstone intake fan to help keep things cool. It blows air right over video card.
Renz, let me know how that 7900 runs. I am going to pick one up when I upgrade to a PCI-Express MB.

So what's the general opinion of me trying to run this with my sad little Raedon 9600? It's supported on the low end, did fairly well on the diagnostic. But I'm afraid.
I don't know if it's my archaic Athlon XP 1800+ or my pitiful 512 MB of DDR-266 that's killing my framerates, but you should be able to run the game fairly well...at 640x480 and with some of the settings turned down or off, of course.
I really should've convinced my stepdad all those years ago to spring for a 9800 instead of a 9600 XT...then again, the latter cost 200 US$ at the time, and we had no such thing as the GeForce 6x00 or the Radeon Xx00 series. Even so, I only have a 200W PSU in this thing...
...Damn it, why do I always get stuck with the low-end stuff? Admitted, I do have 1000 US$, but I want my dual-core, 2 GB RAM, 7800/X1800-based system, damn it! And such things do not come cheap!

If you were to go with a regular A64 instead of an X2, you could just about get that for $1000. All together, counting the ram I picked up in November, the computer I just built cost me about $1125. And since ram is a little cheaper nowadays, you could get a 2 gig system for about that same price...if not a little less.

I have these specs:
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz
GeForce 6600GT
1024 RAM
Would i be able to run the game on the 1024x768 resolution and how well? (If at all)

some people claim to get decent framerates with systems like that. i have no idea how.
i'm thinking you will probably have to drop the resolution to 800x600 and low to medium details. turn off shadows, lower grass density, etc..

Thanks, that's what i wanted to know. 800*600 resolution just isn't acceptable, i'll have to hold off buying the game until i get a new computer then.
