This is a very timely thread, as I've been trying to tackle that very backlog for a few months. I've finally tackled The Nameless Mod, Ultima Underworld and of its successors (yes, including Ascendant), The Black Parade, The Dark Mod, the Dead Space and FEAR series, Riddick, Stanley Parable, and the original Fallout, among many others. Now I'm tackling Styx and FO2. Still on my list:
STALKER series (I made it halfway through SoC then fell off it years back), and the Metro games
The KOTOR games (again, made it halfway through the first one then got distracted by Hitman)
Dark Souls (made it maybe a third of the way in before Remastered got released, then everything got all confused)
Alpha Protocol
Far Cry 2
Planescape: Torment
Arcanum
Starship Titanic (always loved Douglas Adams and I've had this forever)
Weird West (gotta see what Raf is up to post-Arkane!)
SW: Dark Forces
The Mass Effect Trilogy
Terra Nova SFC
OG Tomb Raider (I never played the Core games! Only from Legend onwards. Coincidentally, Legend was co-designed by Doug Church!)
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners
Cruelty Squad
Deadly Premonition
Okami
Psychonauts (another I bounced off)
Control
Wing Commander
...and many others, of course, but that's what's coming to mind immediately.

To finish
Silent Storm
Combat Mission: Fortress Italy
Hidden & Dangerous 2
Fallout 4
The Void
Beyond Good & Evil
Jagged Alliance 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Outer Wilds
Cossacks 2

That's my aggresively trimmed list :eww:

-STALKER SoC was good, but kind of an exhausting experience, so I didn't play the other two old ones. STALKER 2 is on my waiting list, but I didn't feel that it deserves a place on my BoS. I played the first Metro game too and it was quite decent.
-KOTOR games have great stories but the actual gameplay is truly awful. I got at least halfway through KOTOR 2 until I just couldn't take it anymore.
-Alpha Protocol! I had forgotten all about that game. I loved it when I played it, but something tells me that it hasn't aged very well. I remember that it had awful stealth mechanics.
-Planescape: Torment is another classic that I probably should play. I tried it a long time ago, but it didn't grab my attention within the first two hours or so, so I gave up and never went back.
-Weird West is an interesting experiment, but I found it a bit disappointing. It has all the ingredients of my dream game, but I didn't find it very fun to play. I didn't like the story.
-SW: Dark Forces was amazing... 30 years ago! Some of the level design seemed pretty bad even back then. Perhaps the recent remaster is worth a try.
-The Mass Effect games are on my waiting list too. Already played the first one (it was OK) and ME2 is supposed to be even better, so I'll surely give it a go some time.

I think most of us have literally hundreds of games that we own but haven't played. But I always feel bad that I haven't played these, which are kind of in the pantheon of games that have a "6 degrees of TTLG" feel to them:
Anachronox
Deus Ex Invisible War
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Fallout 1 and 2
Ultima Underworld 1 and 2
Underworld Ascendant (OK, not really)
Arx Fatalis (played about 1/2 way thru about 5 times now but never finished)
Stalker Call of Pripyat (again, about 5 false starts there)
Bloodborne
Sekiro
Deathloop

That's probably the longest running game in my PC backlog. I bought it when it came out and I don't know if I've ever even gotten past the opening area.

Yeah same, a friend gave me the disks back in high school with the strategy guide, telling me the game was literally impossible to finish without said guide. I've started reading the guide, so I may be crossing that one off the list soon!

I finished off an old C64 game called Shogun that, if you look it up, people will say it's impossible to finish. I don't think I saw another person reporting having finished it. And it didn't have any guide that I've ever seen. (It released with a manual that explained a lot, just going by faint memory, but I've never seen a scan of it, so I don't remember how useful it was. My memory from the '80s was that it wasn't very useful.)
But I just figured it out playing it again, knowing what I know now about game systems, then made a guide and a recording of finishing it that I think is still out there on some forum somewhere. I can't even remember where that is now. But that's an example of coming back to a game ~40 years later to finish off without even being sure it could be finished.

Was it also based on the James Clavell novel? I think there was an Infocom text adventure of that title, and that one was an adaptation of the novel, as far as I know.
demagogue on 13/2/2025 at 21:56
Not really no. It was a game purely about gathering followers, and you get to be Shogun when you get 20 of them. Some of the characters were named after characters in the Clavell novel, but that's the extent of the connection to the novel.

Ah Shogun, that was a great game. I think I got to 20 followers but memory is hazy. It was quite a cool exploration game for its time.
