I'd call baking the background into the image to be the sloppy equivalent of using a properly alpha'd image.
That depends on the situation, as I am about to clarify:

overlay a translucent or oddly-shaped image onto a complex background at an arbitrary point on that background dictated by page flow, or in a fashion where the background can shift through page resizing or scrolling.
This is probably the best way to use it. On the other hand, it's all too easy to make a large logo with transparancy, and just slap it somewhere on the page. For the end user, this means that at worst you'd have to download the background image, the logo image and the alpha channel, istead of just a baked background image. At best you'd just have to download an extra alpha channel.

...and at what point did everyone in the web design industry forget how to optimise for filesize and matte images where appropriate? Your sole objection to the implementation of a powerful and flexible feature that has been supported for years in other browsers is that the people who would use it (professional designers) don't know how to do their jobs and it will make them lazy. You'll have to forgive me if I show a certain asperity at the suggestion.

Far from everybody pours their heart and soul in their designs like you do, Vigil. Sloth and greed are common sins.

"...and do you know how many of these 3 million downloads were done by Windows Update, which is enabled by default in XP and might have updated IE on countless internet-connected computers without running it by the owner first?"
None, because it isn't available from Windows Update yet. Nice to see Firefox users are still so desperately insecure.

The family PC uses IE7 now, but that's only because I can't convince my stepdad to use anything other than bloody Internet Exploiter.
As for my legacy PC, I use Opera because it might be less demanding on the dated hardware than Firefox. I don't really have a preference between the two, though. (I do have a slight bent towards Opera, but that's probably because I use it more.) If it's actually MORE demanding than Firefox, though, I'll switch right now.
