Tell you what though. If someone keeps showing me Lady Gaga videos and Modern Family episodes every time I go over to visit them, I've learned enough not to associate that with their IQ, but it does mean we've established a relatability gap that's never going to be crossed at certain levels.

Taste is subjective, but objectively speaking music quality has declined as explained in this video

Autotune and mumble rap are perfect examples. Music used to have meaning, substance and quality. Today we have Lil Cheesy with his smash hit 'Blurp blarp bzurp' spouting gibberish or repeating the same 3 or 4 words for 4 minutes over some prefab beat

Contrary to all the mouthbreathers who end up inevitably being posted on r/iamverysmart, a high IQ and an inclination for the equally high arts aren't necessarily guaranteed as a single package. Some of the smartest people I've met were into some of the stupidest shit imaginable.
Right now, the smartest person in the world isn't getting lost listening to Mozart and Bach being played simultaneously. No. They're probably listening to goddamn J-Pop while watching reruns of Three's Company.

One of the smartest people I know, a researcher in quantum mechanics, had a phase where she was into viking metal. Sometimes you've just got to nod your head and let people have their things.

Occasionally, rarely, here and there. Just like today. Music was always mostly crap, though. And people have always been arguing that music quality is declining. There's probably a quote from some ancient Greek philosopher on the subject, because while many things in the world change, prejudice against the latest entertainment is a reliable constant. Cherry picking examples is a pretty reliable constant, too.

That totally disproves my point. Viking metal is pretty rad, only appreciated by the highest quality of folk.

Going to have to second the Viking metal. Nothing better to raid villages by.

Everyone around me is ravenously devouring Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Steam, Kindle, etc every single waking moment like it's the only thing they live for (I know it's not, retorters, we all have careers/family
No no, you got it right the first time. What you're saying is definitely hitting home with me. The main thing I think about and invest my time in is entertainment. Both consuming it and creating my own (which will probably just get lost in The Great Stream Of Content).

Christ, are we bored, and at the worst possible time.
The worst possible time historically speaking? I don't know about that. It's not like we have to fight off predators or work ourselves to death just to get by. Most of us(on this forum) lead privileged existences where we have the luxury of spending a lot of time on the things we enjoy.

There was a skunk in my backyard a couple hours ago. If I walked outside at just the wrong moment, I could've been sprayed.
This is shit I shouldn't have to worry about living in a 1st world country.
Also, there are coyotes living in the little patch of woods across the street from me. They're big old bastards, too. When I saw them the night before, I thought they were deer running down the road.
