Need to get this off my chest. This is something that's started to really grind my gears whenever I see it, particularly among gamers but this can apply to any kind of medium really. The idea that you like something I don't like, therefore, you clearly have bad taste and my taste is superior. It just speaks to a gate keeping mindset that I absolutely despise.
Taste is completely subjective, so it's asinine to really say someone has bad taste. This goes into also thinking someone's intelligence can be gauged based on their taste because let me tell you, I know someone who enjoyed a lot of "high brow" media and yet is one of the dopiest people I know.
I just needed to get that out.

Enjoying fictitious media at all is a gigantic waste of time anyways, so who really cares if it's high-brow or low-brow. Everyone these days is so hyper-fixated on how well entertained they are, and it's shocked me into disappearing from this place and re-evaluating many friendships in real life. Who really gives a toss what fake stories and experiences and musical sounds you've elected to consume? Does this matter to the world in any way?
I get it, life imitates art, it can inspire us to dream bigger, but holy hell are we as a people taking this to extreme excess. This whole forum has collapsed into megathreads about what media you're consuming, and needing more more more, like that's the primary worth of a human being. Everyone around me is ravenously devouring Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Steam, Kindle, etc every single waking moment like it's the only thing they live for (I know it's not, retorters, we all have careers/family) perhaps in fear of "missing out" on some random thing someone made. On top of that, you probably want to make content yourself, and so does the next guy, and the next guy, and the next guy, and the next guy, until we have this colossal avalanche of content that nobody anywhere has any hopes of getting through even 0.001% in one lifetime and reduces the value of all of it.
Christ, are we bored, and at the worst possible time. Also I am a massive hypocrite
Pretty much. I'm not gonna act like I don't get obsessed over geeky shit and media, both online and in real life, but where media was once used to enhance our lives, it's not becoming our lives entirely. It's not even you spend a lot of time watching shows or playing games, it's that you see what you consume as your main identity, and thusly judge other people by that same metric. I hate most Adam Sandler movies, but I'm not going to assume someone is stupid just because they enjoyed Pixels or whatever. Talking about media should be fun and a way for people to come together, not pushed away through things like gatekeeping.
Also I admit I am guilty at times of having the fear of missing out. I'm not saying it it happens a lot, thankfully, but it does happen. I mean, I have this mindset that once something new of any kind of media comes out, I can't see any previous pieces of it until I've caught up. It's not a good thing to have.

Generally agree with you...
BUT there's a few egregious exceptions I need to carve out.....like Justin Bieber, anything involving the Kardashians, Family Guy, The Bachelor, Michael Bay movies, and Nikki Minaj.

You're allowed to like all those things, Tony. We won't judge you any more than we already do.
Tony_Tarantula on 31/5/2018 at 00:46
Don't really care, I've been right about a lot more things than the groupthink has been right about.
Renzatic on 31/5/2018 at 00:58
You're so edgy.

[insert obligatory crack about certain forum members clearly proving that bad taste exists here]

I'm pretty sure there are at least 4 people here who like Nickelback.
God bless their black souls and shriveled hearts, I say.
