"London paper The Independent reports that a novel that Lord of the Rings creator J.R.R. Tolkien began to write in 1918, only to abandon, has finally been completed by The Hobbit writer's son, Christopher. What's more, The Children of Hurin, described by its publisher as 'an epic story of adventure, tragedy, fellowship and heroism,' will go on sale next month."
Wow. For Tolkien dweebs, this is big news. Did anybody else see this coming?

If I'm not mistaken, he is drawing from Unfinished Tales, which is an earlier collection of previously unpublished stories written by Tolkien Senior. As for a surprise, no; Christopher Tolkien has been managing his father's work for decades now.

Yah, the Hurin and Turin Turambar stories come from Unfinished Tales, but I didn't know that Christopher Tolkien was still working on those.

I've known for a while that it's coming out in April. Thought I saw the info here, or I would've made a post about it.
That said, I never really got into the rest of the universe, beyond The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, and appendices. Read parts of The Silmarillion, but I don't think I've ever sat down and read straight through. Missing out?

I don't really think old Tolkien Jr. is in it for the money

Turin's part is the best of it, imo. I'm looking forward to reading it a little more fleshed out.

The Silmarillion is my favorite Tolkien book. Turin is good. I'm quite fond of Beren and Luthien's story though.
