You can't get people to understand you... - by TTK12G3

I think I'd have to hear the actual recording of the calls before having an opinion as to whether or not the operator should be canned. What I'd like to know is if she bothered to ask any questions of the boy. Isn't that what they're supposed to do to make sure the call is legitimate? I mean, the little kid had to be upset and that had to have been discernable over the phone. Right?

Have you ever tried talking to an upset child? You have to be patient, calm, and understanding to get any bit from what he or she is trying to say.
Sadly, there are cases where the 911 operators apparently don't have that kind of time.:p

Someone called Martek has hijacked all of these accounts and now I must hijack the account of "Fingernail" to communicate

So, it seems the moral of the story here is that people will never know who posted what message unless you clearly sign your each and every post.

That's outrageous! I had a phone once that had a specific 911 button on it, and my cat stepped on it in the middle of the night; it's a bit scary to have the police barge into your bedroom, but we got it all straightened out pretty quickly. Put the phone where the cat couldn't step on it again.
Poor kid, doing the right thing alone with his dying mother and no-one to listen to him.

Deciding whether the call is legitimate shouldn't be a job for the operator. Treating a false call as legitimate might waste a bit of money and time, but treating a legitimate call as false can kill people. Wasting time with unnecessary questions to figure it out is dangerous too - response time is critical, as the calls are often about things that can kill you quickly. Another danger is that when the system fails, and someone dies or is seriously harmed as a result, some people will call their local fire or police station directly, instead of using the emergency system, which often actually causes longer response times.
