Vice had a thing on this a while ago (not that I read Vice or anything, I'm not a hipster), entitled 'What the Fuck Happened? (And Why Does Everything Look Like Shit?). I agree up to a point - streamlined cars ARE better for long distance driving, they use up less of the warjuice and they go faster and kill you less. When all you do is bootle round town at 30 getting stuck in traffic then there is NO point, however, and you might as well get stylish instead. They should make an electric town-car with dapper 50's retro-futuristic stylings, but they're not going to because everyone responsible for the aesthetic design of cars these days is either a white-pajamas-and-sandles-wearing 2001-obsessed graphic-design mental dead-zone or some kind of boring coke fiend.

That has got to be the stupidest cultural phenomenon I've ever heard about. What kind of wackos invest hundreds of work hours and thousands of monies to make a car JUMP UP AND DOWN?

Telling the truth, I don't feel about design the way you (AR Master) do - I find the modern, sleek style quite attractive. With one exception, though: cars. I mean, while I would definitely rather have a safe and economic car than a pretty one - boy, are those new cars ugly... I mean, Toyota Prius looks like an oversized soap box! Vivian has got the right idea, fitting city cars with old-style exterior would be amazing; as far as I'm concerned they wouldn't even have to look that old either, as I am highly fond of something as relatively young as the BMW exterior line from mid-1980s, with its shark-nose front and so on.
By the way, another possible source of the problem you mentioned may be that a lot of people simply have no style at all... Observing traffic in the US has led me to the conclusions that in many cases the main thing as far as cars are concerned is size, and don't even get me started on mobile phones.

No modern cars are uglier than the Element and the Scion. For the love of god, what levels of stupidity must be coursing through a person's veins for them to actually WANT a car that looks like a cinder block on wheels?
