Hey, long time thief fan, first time poster.
I recently got the urge to replay the entire thief series again, and having previously been able to get Thief 2 to run on XP I now find myself unable to do so. I've scoured through every thread I can find on these forums yet I can find no mention of my particular problem. I'm using DDFix, 1.18 and widescreen patch and all that but neither help me with my problem.
Using latest nvidia drivers with a geforce 9800 GTX card.
It's to do with the menu scaling, really. I can play the game on 640x800 but the game has the awful color issue and I'd rather play it in 1280x1024 with the proper colors.
In ddfix, however, once the patch is applied the game starts and I can hear the background hum, however the desktop still shows. I can move the mouse around and hear the buttons light up, I can even click things if I explore a bit, but only the desktop is shown.
Any help here? really would like to be able to play Thief 2 with ddfix AND be able to access the menu. Really have no clue how to fix this since I've found no mention of the problem elsewhere, and I don't want to roll back my drivers to something really old my card probably won't support.
Really need to get my thief fix with all the Thief 4 rumours going around these days :(

Do a search for your Video card. The newer drivers and some cards just don't make it.
Also try COMPATIBILITY, and if you have a multi-core CPU, you need to force it to run with ONE CORE only.
It sounds like the Vcard.

This is a known problem with current drivers/gfx card.
I always fall back on the old uninstall and reinstall method, which I recommend here also. But something else you might try beforehand is setting the AA (antialiasing) so it is turned off or set to 8x in the nvidia control panel.
I have pointed this out before but it hasnt made its way into the FAQ

Success! Turning off anti-aliasing worked. Feel like an idiot for not trying that before.
That said, game still looks fine with it off. Thank you very much for the help!

Don't be, I don't think anyone but myself came across it and even then I found by accident - I was having issue with AA not working in thief at the time...
And dare I say it again "this needs to be in the big red faq" - that was not aimed at you Rykanik, David can you do the honours..

Absolutely no offense taken. I'm just happy Thief 2 is still perfectly playable with this modern hardware.

well without the hard work that produced DDfix and the widescreen patch, thief would have died out..
