Hi
Excuse my sudden appearence, although I used to be a regular here that was all but a long time ago. Some on IRC know me as Jin but I have only lurked around here recently until I remembered my username and password.
Now, I've noticed about 4 different SS1 conversion projects. One for HL1, one for Doom3, etc. But I think I have a better idea personally. Instead of limiting ourselves to something such as a commercial game engine with it's own SDK, why hasn't anyone thought of using open-source tools to create such a conversion?
May I present my idea: NeoAxis
(
http://www.neoaxisgroup.com/)
Now this is one hell of a non-commercial engine. It may be a bit overkill for something as simple as an SS1 conversion. But think of this. There is complete control over game content, AI logic, GUI, and no limitations on the features which can be coded. I am willing to start work on this if I can get a handful of people together to provide things such as level architecture and models. I have high knowledge in C# and believe I could code the UI and features of the SS1 engine and keep true to their original nature.
So what do you all say to that?

1. They will all fall under the might of EA's cease-and-desist-o-matic.
2. All SS1 remake projects will die anyway until all the game's enemies have been 3D modeled.

Why would they care about a 10+ year old game anyway? It's not like they're making money from it or anything.

Because you are messing with their intellectual property. Honestly, if I knew as much as you about programing, I would just go ahead and make my own game. You could even make some money.

It doesn't matter WHY they care, only that they DO. Every SS1 remake project that's gotten far enough along for them to notice (with one exception, see below), has been shut down. This is fact, not idle speculation.
The only SS1 remake project that's safe is the Citadel Conversion Project, and only because it's based on SS2, which EA also published.
If all you people that come along waving your arms and making bold proclamations really cared about SS1 as much as you claim to, you'd offer to help out the CCP guys, instead of just taking your ball and going home when you discover that your idea isn't viable.

I've mentioned this a few times before, but Lanel's Citadel conversion project was interesting because they weren't going to be distributing copyrighted material. It would be a program that ported the assets over to Doom 3, with addition interface code, etc.... Now that I think about it, NPC's would have been a major problem, since I doubt Doom 3 supports 2d sprite enemies. Still, it was a decent attempt, and something to keep in mind if your REALLY serious about such a thing.

I dont think anyone would want 2d sprite enemies with Doom 3 engine.
Any engine for that matter.

Wow, quite the negativity towards my idea huh? That's ok, I expected such a reaction, that's why that's all it was, was an idea. I never even said it'd happen, only that I was willing to cooperate with the community had a group wanted to get together and give it a shot.
I'm aware of EA's reputation, however, I was NOT aware that all the previous projects were C&D'd by them. Therefore, it may be in my best interest just to leave it alone.

No, dingbat. The problem, as has already been explained, is that your idea is DOOMED. Not wanting to waste time or energy on a doomed project is called "common sense", not negativity.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who -when playing old games with a custom engine, like Doomsday- prefer the original sprites to the fan-made 3d models.
