p.s. How scared would you be if your waiter at a restauant said to you:
The beast will rise with his army and go to war with god.
My waiter says that all the time. I think he's a Mormon, though he could be a Hindu. Not sure if he's trying to enlist me in Satan's Army or just give me a friendly headsup! If I were to tip him better, maybe he'd cease & desisit? He always gives excellent service, so it's hard to know where he's coming from.

I know that using stock sound effects always has been a part of Doctor Who. This time though, I thought I heard more than the average amount of DOOM sound effects, particularly the doors... :erg:

Actually, we don't orbit around the black hole, we are spiraling in towards it. Physics dictates that NOTHING can be in geostationary or otherwise true orbit around a black hole, it is a physical impossability. We are due to be eaten by our galaxy's black hole in a couple of billion years.
Bollocks. Outside its event horizon, a black hole is just like any other lump of matter. And I think we can safely assume we're outside the event horizon of the hypothetical galactic core black hole.
I would fanwank the Doctor's "impossible!" claims to mean "impossible! We should be being torn apart by tidal forces this close to the black hole!".
Or possibly, they ARE inside the event horizon, and are orbiting around the singularity, which really IS impossible. Well, unless you have some superscience graviton/spacetime manipulation beam or something. Which the planet does. Hmm. That works fairly well, actually. Now I feel stupid for not thinking of that first.

What? No it doesn't. The gravitational field of a black hole is exactly the same as the gravitational field of a non-black hole of equal mass. Things only get interesting if you get near the event horizon.
If the Sun turned into a black hole right now none of the planets' orbits would change a bit.

Okay back to discussing what
"the beast" is. To make it turn out to be Satan
would be silly in my opinion. Highly cool and interesting to watch (damn them for not going down the Chthulu route) it would be kinda stupid and make every other challenge the Doctor faces a m00t point if he's defeated the prince of darkness himself.
Nah, its definately going to turn out to be
the master
. Regrettably they already used Giles this season so they cant use him to play that character - a role he would be ideally suited for.
Anyway, cant wait to see what happens since this was the first proper dark/biblical episode yet i think.

Two things:
1. I recant my absurd claim that nothing can orbit a black hole, It was stupid and irresponsible.
2. It WON'T be the master, trust me. I've been a doctor who fan for many a year, and I know that
satan
is who he is, and the master is completely sperate.
satan
has even appeared in one past adventure, the Master is a completely seperate entity, and has NEVER been viewed as any sort of
demon
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, WE SAW THE
HORNS
PEOPLE!!!!
also the 'ood' at the end of the episode were saying:
Some call me abbadon and some call me sutek, some call me satan and the prince of darkness...
also, did you notice that the orbit of the planet followed the formula (as said by the doctor:)
6 to the power of 6 every 6 seconds...
Cheesy as it is, satan is the enemy.

I have a feeling that Rose's statement about black holes maybe being a portal to some other place, and Satan's incredibly strong apparent desire to NOT be sucked into that black hole will figure into the resolution somehow. Like, say, the black hole being a portal into Heaven, or something.
Haegan on 5/6/2006 at 08:27
I think you might be on the right track Fafhrd, the whole thing rose said about the black hole being a
portal/wormhole
sounds very 'whoish' to me. (not sure about the bit on heaven, but the rest sounds VERY credible for a plotline.)

More importantly: has the doctor forgotten he can get out his Tardis key and summon the Tardis to appear there?
I mean, he did it before in series one...

Good Point. Maybe it is something to do with the fact that the outside of the TARDIS was nearby when he wanted to summon it, even though it was missing the inside, it might have helped. That's the geeky answer, the simple one is that the producers wanted to make a good story, getting trapped, then immediatly summoning the TARDIS just isn't good TV. Great idea though d0om!:)
