Remember that there was no possibility for bridges
While quite right (you had basically three "sections" stacked on each other: solid floor, air room and solid ceiling) is was possibile making bridges.
I once made a (no longer existant I fear) doom level that featured a "crossing" section. When going in one direction you would go "over the (automaticall raised section) bridge and could look down" then you went further and turned two cornes and went "under the (automatically lowered section) bridge".
Created the illusion of a crossing and turning hallway that goes down and down..
Ah, those days...

Wow, I've heard a lot of people tried to make overlapping areas but they were always punched back by graphical glitches. Nice to hear you figured out a work around.

Actually the rendering in Doom did cheat a whole lot when it comes to true 3d. Thus the shortcomings. Funnily enough these cheats were also Dooms greatest innovations that made the game run even on a 386 machine.
In any case. UW's my favorite in all other aspects but the 'Drunken Bastards Doom Party', Aah, now those we're the days... ;)

Well, I look upon it as a spiritual successor to the series. At any rate, I'm just as excited about it as if it were an official sequel. No disrespect to Arkane Studios was intended.
