Can't we just settle and say everyone is a little bit bisexual but some people are just more fussy than others?
The_Raven on 24/5/2008 at 00:10
There's a lot of truth to that, you know?
Mr.Duck on 24/5/2008 at 03:02
Pretty much, yup.
Your house or mine, boyo?

Are you saying that blonds and redheads don't exist? :p
Blonds and redheads breed. Unless, of course, they're gay blonds or gay redheads.

I think that's probably the simplest explanation. Occam's Razor and all that. =P

What, sleep with a girl and you're doomed to a life of a barren womb?

If homosexuality were caused by genes, it would have to be triggered by a gene malfunction, wouldn't it? I mean, it's kinda hard to pass down a latent gene if both partners can't impregnate each other. :erg:

( should probably add in here that people are playing this genetic vs environmental line like its fairly clear cut. It's anything but clear cut and that's only one of the reasons why).

I don't buy it because it's my choice. I choose to sleep with women, I like sleeping with women, it's part of who I am, and I have absolutely no obligation to prove or explain anything to anyone. It just
is. I could just as easily choose to sleep with no one, or I could choose to sleep with men, which I have chosen to do in the past, and found that I don't care for it much.
You realise of course you've given a proper circular argument; I 'choose' to do it because I like it. I like it because I like it.
You might not care either way or want to know, but I hope it's fairly obvious that there's a huge question there that's going to get asked by somebody, if not you. So don't be overly surprised that people start looking for answers in physiological make up.
There's a tendency of some folks to have a sort of humanist faith in the inexplicability of people and it's apparently sort of comforting. But the sciences do know quite a bit about what goes on and can explain things about the way we develop. And it's usually refreshingly and unintuitively complex, I find anyway. There's enough going on to keep reductionist types from identifying the 'gay gene', or anything else like that.

What does you not having to explain your sexuality have to do with anything, anyway? I don't have to justify the mechanics of my knee joint, but there are fairly solid causative factors involved in it being the way it is.
... going on a limb here, as I'm a long way from any decent source of information (screw the internet, dont have the time), but wasn't a big part of the whole gay-netics thing based on it being an epiphenomenon associated with some genetic advantages conferred on other sexes? Like a mixed sex litter would end up with increased fertility or boosted immune systems in the female offspring but as a consequence the male offspring were more likely to be gay, or vice-versa. That way it gets maintained in the population regardless of the non-breeding thing.

I'm not going to change an integral part of myself because some stupid religious crazies with too much time on their hands feels disgusted when they think of two women having sex with each other.
It may comfort you that the rest of us jacks off to the same thought.
And that reminds me of something... Do the women of ttlg find gay male sex stimulating?
Fingernail on 24/5/2008 at 10:35
However, gay people do contribute to the raising of children.
I'm sure all the guys here used to wish they had a "fun gay uncle", and every teenage girl with problems could do with the archetypal "man hating lesbian aunt your father is a piece of shit" in her times of need.
No but seriously sometimes gay people do have children (not like that, obviously). Or adopt them.

I think you're mostly right Fingernail. I think that a lot of people (I won't say everyone) are a bit bisexual. I do think that some people might go 100% either way, however. I imagine it must be nice to be 100% certain of your sexuality, and I'm kind of envious towards people who are that certain (be they straight or gay... actually, I feel the same way about atheists and religious people, for that matter). When you only want one thing, it's a lot easier to pursue that one thing, there's less distractions. For many years I caused myself a lot of needless turmoil trying to classify myself as gay or straight, but it was just wasted time... for better or worse I'm cursed to find both women and men sexually attractive. Both genders have qualities I admire. On the other hand, there are also things about both genders I despise. Maybe a third gender is needed, some kind of alchemical hermaphrodite, or something along those lines. The whole marriage of the opposites thing. But I digress.
And Scots, really, Sypha virgin jokes? Why not make a crack about Monica Lewinsky or Y2K while you're at it.:tsktsk:
