They can probably patch out the technical problems and then it maybe worth picking up a year from now, on heavy discount or in an indie bundle. No helping the art direction change though.
The good news is the vanilla game is relatively easy to get running on modern PCs, just apply a fan patch and do some INI tweaks to change resolution and FOV. UE1/1.5/2 powered games tend to age really well on newer hardware and OSes.
