bwahaha microsoft will turn all the PC game makers into x-box owners' slaves

So...you hate Microsoft because they employ a lot of talented people?
Seriously, though, the X-Box might be the best thing that's happened to PC gaming in quite a while. Face it - very few PC games make money. If the large-scale high technology development is to continue, a lot more money is needed in the industry. Cross platform development is becoming more and more important, as the consoles are where the money is. So, if we accept that a lot of our games are going to also be console games, which would you rather it was? The PS2 or the Xbox? If we go for the PS2, we're effectively putting a cap on the technology available to developers thanks to its tired old tech. The Xbox is encouraging PC-style games to be developed for it, and that can only help the PC - if Xbox money means we get to play Half Life 2, or allows Ion Storm to continue making games, then I'm all for it.

You see, this is why I hate you.
*Bitch-slaps Myoldnamebroke*
Really, with brains like that, I wonder why you weren't an Atari exec when the NES deal was being made...
Myoldnamebroke on 17/6/2003 at 08:17
OK, you tell me how you fund PC game development.

OK, you tell me how you fund PC game development.
Probably not by supporting the console industry... With the exceptions of cross-platform release and cases where the comany is within both industries at once, the PC gaming industry is in direct competition with the console industry. I really must point out a few more quotes from your last post, something that I sincerely hope is a long running joke that I've been left out in...
So...you hate Microsoft because they employ a lot of talented people?
I can't speak for Kuuler, but my personal motivation is that they pursue the open-source community instead of looking to much larger concerns. For instance, China...
Very few PC games make money... consoles are where the money is.
Lmao... Worst thing is that you're right... I saw a Valve programmer eating out of my garbage yesterday... Joking aside, I just have to again point out Atari and the fact that there are much more consoles that utterly fail, bringing down some pretty passable titles and entire companies with them, than those that pass, and that the console development industry is for the most part, and I say this at the risk of being flamed, just three companies, maybe four if you include Sega. I'm certainly not saying that they don't make money, but just asking you to think about what you're saying.
...Xbox money means we get to play Half Life 2...
Really, why do you live on the assumption that Valve employees live in poverty and cheerfully accept twenty dollar handouts from Microsoft, or that Microsoft even gives a penny out to anyone else, especially to Valve, a company that encourages people to run servers on an OS supported by "The Great Open-Source Satan." Also, HL2 was in development when X-Box was but dollar sign burned onto Bill Gates's retina...
RyushiBlade on 18/6/2003 at 03:39
I've been left out of this for a whole week and can't seem to pick up the thread again ^.^;
And don't say anything against Sega! ... Sega is cool ;)
Myoldnamebroke on 18/6/2003 at 07:25
Well, the Microsoft comment was directed at Kuuler...his particular motivation just seemed a bit odd...
Valve were a poor example - they're one of the few developers in the world who are financially secure.
Obviously more consoles fail miserably. A console isn't used for anything else. PCs will never be obliterated as a gaming platform, simply because they've embedded themselves into today's lifestyle. They will always exist to play games on.
However, if we want to continue the development of high-technology, high-profile titles for the PC, we have to accept that console games (as a general rule) sell buckets more than PC games. 4 massive PC titles soon to be coming out: Doom 3, HL2, DX2, Thief 3 - all of them are in cross platform development. If the only way a publisher was going to fund a fairly risky game like Thief was to have it in development for the console as well, then hurrah for consoles.
Microsoft have to give pennies out to people they want to make games for them. Games cost vast sums of money to be developed.
And it's console hardware that's just 3 or 4 companies, not software, so that point is kind of irrelevant.
'direct competition with the console industry' - and by encouraging cross platform development, the Xbox is removing that competition (Microsoft removing competition! Well I never!).

I think your missing a basic marketing concept. There's so much money in the console market and if the title would be readily accepted by that market, it would be STUPID not to do it. From a business standpoint, you can't afford to miss out on a piece of the big pie. (I'm not even a marketing person).
Myoldnamebroke on 18/6/2003 at 19:03
I think you're missing an apostrophe ;)
And I'm not sure who you're talking to. You seem to be supporting my point, but also telling me that I've missed a basic concept...
Justice01 on 19/6/2003 at 00:52
You're right -myoldnamebroke- thanks for pointing that out!;)
I was simply making a point for cross platform development. Is that not the underlying issue of this discussion? I see the points made by exile and yourself, but I wanted to point this out as well.
