Uh what? The Steam Controller's trackpad was designed precisely to make up for the shortcomings of analog sticks for mouse movement (it's highly twitchy and very close to mouse precision, and people have used them competitively). An Xbox controller is in no way better for fast paced games, but would be okay for Thief.
That hasn't been my experience, for me pin point precision with the Steam Controller is actually quite difficult compared to just using a mouse or even an analog stick. Then again it could be because I have fidgety fingers.

I've been using a Xbox controller in conjunction with xpadder for years for all 3 thief games, but then I'm left handed so changing the in-game thief control options to suit a left hander using a keyboard was a nightmare anyway and never really worked.
There are not enough buttons on an Xbox so I have to play with my keyboard close by so I can occasionally use a few keys, and I have to manually scroll through the weapons and inventory items, but over all it works brilliantly, especially when fighting AIs, and even more especially when mantling in T3.

What I often do when there isn't enough buttons for any game is have what I call an alternate function button, like the left bumper, which changes what some of the other buttons do, kind of like a shift key.

I don't know about Xbox, but I can write a guide for PS3 controller compatibility if anyone is interested.
