Well, my point was that if she was (mostly) powerless, there's a reason for her to sit around, doing nothing; if they gave her powers and then made her sit around, doing nothing, it's less excusable.

Why are people saying that
Phoenix moved Charles into the man, when it seems far more likley that Charles simply did it himself to escape from death.
And more importantly:
They had 4 needles! Wolverine could have taken one to stick Jean with (hidden in his pants which was the one part of his clothes she didn't disintergrate!) Or Leech could have walked up to her and given her a hug.

Leech doesn't have the regeneration to withstand the amount of punishment that Wolverine took. His mutant negating aura has a very limited range.
The two explanations I was given were that
Charles simply isn't powerful enough, or
wouldn't have done it due to ethical reasons. His smile also suggests that it was Jean; he doesn't seem like the smug type to stare death in the face and smile.

Seems a bit odd to kill someone, but then save them by transfering them into another body, why not simply -not- kill them? And the smile would be Charles telling wolverine he's OK? Maybe Charles will be the bad guy in the next film due to him crossing over ethical boundaries in order to surive?

Jean who slipped him out of that body and into another, the Phoenix totally unaware. Or maybe that's stretching it

d0om's pretty much said everything I was going to say about the ending. Using all four cures on Magneto and then killing Jean was the only thing in the film that really annoyed me. Though I was mollified slightly by the implication right at the end that the cure may only be temporary.
And yeah, I'd have thought that if there was any transferring of consciousness going on, it'd've been Charles. I've never read the comics, and this was the first X-Men film I've seen, so I have no real idea of the limits of Xavier's abilities, or whether Jean could do that kind of thing. Mostly she just seems telekinetic. Assuming she did do it, though, the Phoenix-doing-the-killing-and-Jean-doing-the-saving theory seems the most plausible.
In any case, it was good fun.

I don't think they could have done anything to
Phoenix, with the cure or Leech, as it's pretty hard to sneak up on an omnipotent telepath? Only Wolverine could get close as he can regenerate, and Phoenix would only let her guard down for him because Jean loved him or something, aww
Movie Xavier seems to be less powerful, but he still seems quite capable of such a stunt. Jean possesses both telekinesis and telepathy, but she is a far stronger TK'er than she is telepath.
Jean may have assisted the professor or at least registered his transferral, she may even have cloaked it from Phoenix.
I'd say the movie succeeded for you at least.

One of the things that bothered me and my friend when we went to see it was If Magneto could pick up the Golden Gate Bridge and drop it where he liked, why not drop it on Alcatraz and obliterate the whole thing. For komedy value, he could have folded it up into a giant mallet shape beforehand.
