Most of you people who play Morrowind on the XBox has seen this. The console starts making weird noises, as if it's trying to read the disk but can't. Then the game freezes and it says something to the effect of, "There's a problem with the disk you're using. It may be dirty or damaged."
This happens to me on both Morrowind and Fable. It is NOT cool. It seems to happen to me more than anyone else (as does Morrowind crashing on the PC. Someone is out to get me, I always get the bad stuff.) So why?
The disk is clean, or in Fable's case brand new. I used something to clean the lens of my XBox, which worked for about half an hour before it froze again.
I've been playing around with the idea that, since my X-Box was in the first 'batch', it may have some Read-Disk errors that Microsoft later fixed. Presumeably at the same time they remade the controller. Now I'm stuck with the fat ones. *sigh*

I only get this once about every 80 hours of game play. Though I get it every 5 minutes on computer. No idea how to fix it and I assuming you can't, besides getting a really good computer and using that instead. Umm...it seemed to happen to me more when I used to have my xbox on the carpet, try putting it somewhere, where it can cool effectively.
Oh no! I am going to get fable soon, why do good games have to run slower than a snail?

This is a known problem with older "Thomson" dvd drives that are fitted in the early release X-Boxes.
The newer X-Boxes have Samsung drives which have fewer cases of errors.
(

I think it is possible to get the drive replaced but it means sending your box away for repair. :thumb:

(Sorry, I meant to post this in the general form. Silly me!)
Every 80 hours! Bloody hell, I get it every hour or so. Usually less than that.
I hope sending it in for repair is free (both the process and the shipping. You pay S&H by the weight. Gah.)
And thanks, MobbDeep. I do have a Thompson... Someone's out to ruin my gaming life :erg:

Note that the new Tompson's are fine, it's just the ones from the original batch (which I believe you think you have).
The problem is related to Dual-layer DVDs (Morrowind and Fable are on that list).... hope you can get it fixed cheap... check the price, with the drop in price you might be able to trade it in at EBGames toward a new one (locally they give like $70 trade-in for working XBoxes, or something like that).
Good Luck

I've installed all my games on the HD. I played Deus Ex 2 once from the DVD and it takes forever to load. Can't imagine how long it takes to load Morrowind from DVD but installing it alone took me about twenty minutes. So many files.

Interesting. Well, I can order a new drive online for about $70, so I'm probably going to do that. Considering I've only got $80 to my name at the moment, I'm still mulling it over a bit.
Thanks for the help guys. Never would have figured it out myself :thumb:

Dude, why don't you just get a new Xbox, it'll most probably have a Samsung drive in it - they're down to £100 over here in the UK so I'm sure you can pick one up for similar price wherever you are. :thumb: Then you can do linky-uppy Halo etc using your new and old one!! woo-hoo! :D

I'd love to... Except over here an X-Box costs $150. Depending on whether you're a pessimist or optimist, that's around two to three times the price of the drive I'm replacing. And I don't have the money, heh. I'll check out used X-Box's, but chances are they're used because they've got the old Thompson drives.
Maybe you could just send me yours :cheeky:
