Is W + W + W + W instead of holding 'sneak' button + W when traversing marble, metal surfaces to avoid noise an intended feature?

i never used the sneak/walk button, crouch and tap forward for no noise, i think most just figured it out while playing on tile, here is a example of how it happens " you running through a level and see marble floors/metal then you go into crouch mode and tap walk for a brief time and repeat so not to make noise" never tried the walk/sneak speed so i don't know
it simple terms most of use self learned it or we unlocked that information that already excised :)

I agree with you this can be learned by accident ( although I genuinely can't remember how I learned about this ), but I'm curious is it a bug-abuse or actually in-game feature ( added by devs ).
Playing yesterday Thief 3 for first time I learned that 'sneak' button here can help you to avoid any noise when traversing marble/metal, so this fact alone suggests that maybe they realised by that time (2004) that 'sneak' mechanic when using 'sneak' button wasn't working in Thief 1,2. Question is: did they know about this when they were developing first two games and just left 'taping' as a hidden mechanic or 'taping' is some kind of invention, and all the credit for this invention is on the players side.

Holding the "sneak" button while walking on marble or metal surfaces is likely the intended way to move silently.
It's possible that pressing W four times might produce a similar effect due to a bug in the game. This is unlikely to be intentional, and a patch might fix it in the future.

i noticed the bobbing effect on garrett causes the sound on tile/metal when tap walking on some missions, feels like thief 1 is a bit harder to do it then thief 2, but i notice on a bobb downward its more likely to make a sound, to as you walk right as it bobbs downward stop then redo the walk tap repeat is how it works, also slight being slanted can also help with no sound, just things i self figured out after decades of thief playing
kinda how the diagonal jump you go further then a straight jump
and the run jump in thief 1 and my thief 2 where you jump right as you land to get mach speed :P
rope arrows also has it tricks also worst is the long jump to a rope and you fling off, or drop into a rope by arrow and take mass damage :P
the bag of red spice from captain davidson has no problems in game :P

The swaying effect on the Garrett can cause a sound when hitting the object, but can be minimized by moving it gently and not letting it swing down too hard.

W+W+W... is more interesting mechanically than activating sneak mode with a single button press or than holding W + a sneak button. W+W+W... requires a small amount of skill and is therefore more fun to me.
I even use it in T1 and T2 on marble surfaces, ignoring the intended and easy way to move silently.

yes i know, i had situations in old fan missions where the gap to get into a small area was effect by bobbing, meaning you have to go back a bit then crouch and enter on the downward bobb to access lol

Visually it looks strange, but in actual gameplay terms, you're still moving about the same speed as you would be with analog control.
I play with a controller, and have managed to get analog movement working with the steam controller configuration.
You have to disable steam controller input, start the game, then re-enable steam input to get it to work.
When you're moving at the slowest speeds with analog, it looks a lot more natural, and you're pretty much dead silent.
So I think it makes sense from a gameplay perspective, as you're sort of emulating analog by tapping the key.

Yeah, is not my fav either. I hope a future New Dark patch allows the use of creep modifier while crouched to be as silent as w+w+w. And since purists won't want that, then make it a CFG file option others, like me, can enable
