I didn't exactly dig the demo too much either. It was okay, it didn't really blew me away and there are alot of issues that need resolving, but I did see enough to make me believe that the potential in there to actually make a good game. Yeah, normally a demo is supposed to be a nice preview, but in DX2's case there really wasn't enough to it to show us how the actual game will play...it was more like an aug and engine preview with a slight bit of gameplay thrown in.
That's the reason why I'm saving my final judgement for the retail release..it STILL has a chance to be a great game.

In
theory that's why we download demos. In practice that deviates often enough not to declare any game with an unimpressive demo as dead on arrival.

Can anyone cite an example of a game where the demo sucked, but the full version rocked?

Fallout.

"Beyond Good and Evil" apparently. Second-hand opinion though, 'cause having played neither I can't really back that up :)

Severance didn't have a great demo. That was a game you needed to get the hang of, work your way up to something. A demo couldn't do it justice
I know people who were turned off System Shock 2 by the demo, but I turned them around with the full game. That's a tough one though, since the demo was a pretty good representation of the gameplay when it comes down to it.
Anyway, I am fairly willing to believe these guys could make a game so tightly woven than you can't just hack a piece out, hand it over and it be representative. Still, that just means they have to get creative. I think that most demos have been (as is oft disclaimed) quite underdone and unrepresentative of the final product ever since the trend became to release demos before the game was finished.
If we assume the game is actually good and the demo a poor indication of its features they should make a good one that's unique; set it at the start, but without half the plot spoily stuff they're worried about or something. It'd take a dedicated couple of people a while to do I'd wager. It'd be better than this though.
And make it after the game is done.

Good point Muzman.
This'd be like Valve's great Half-Life: Uplink demo, which was made post-release (or at least released then), which comprised of several new levels to give you the 'feel' for the game.
Of course, the production cost's would probably be fairly high for something like Deus Ex (dialogues etc), but I'm sure it could be done.
On the other hand, they might have more difficulty in giving the feel of the gameplay (ie. looking forward to getting new augs / skills) without "spoiling" the surprise of the real game or doing quite a large demo. ?????

The whole "demo doesn't really matter" theory only works if all you care about is the story cause that is the only major thing missing from the demo. Apart from that the demo shows off how the game will perform on your pc, the controls and the gameplay, and those 3 aspects stink to high heaven.
For the last time IS is not going to make any major fixes! They have already said so! The only things they will "tune" are very minor things like mouse lag and some performance issues. Other than that the game is going to remain exactly the same!
Why do people keep believing that the full version is going to be radically different than the demo? :tsktsk:

good start, now if they get put back the skill system, the damage system with separate parts of body, make the mouse functions better in the inventory and biomod menu, and make a UI not blocking half the screen, it will be all good :ebil:

The demo also doesn't show a good job of showing off the gameplay, either. It just gives you a few simple objectives that don't have many varied solutions.
Either way, I'm not gonna say the game is great or it sucks til I play the full version.
