I've been playing a lot of Wreckfest multiplayer lately. Bugbear's latest (still in Early Access) racer is less arcadey and spectacular than their last few aggressive racing games(Flatout 2/UC, Ridge Racer Unbounded), instead the handling feels more grounded in reality. It feels a lot like the original Destruction Derby actually. Tho some may feel they went a step too far towards realism by not including a reset function, so if your car flips over in the first lap of a race there's a chance you'll be staying like that for the rest of the race. That, and the realistically quite severe damage makes for some tense races. Many of the longer ones eventually turn into endurance matches, where each risk must be carefully weighed. Sure, slamming an opponent off the track would slow him down (not to mention be very fun) but is it worth the damage you'd be doing to your own car?

Like I said it's still in EA so I won't fault anyone for wanting to wait it out. But even in it's current form with 7 cars and 5 tracks, plus 2 or 3 DD-arenas, it's a ton of fun. Especially in MP. There's AI opponents too, but playing against human opponents is always more unpredictable and exciting.

Back to the subject - I was thinking of getting this during the sale, thanks to a hankering (or is that henkering?) for some quick destructive fun. But I wasn't feeling quite lush enough even for the discount price. I also couldn't really gauge which physics fest would be the most fun; this or BeamNG -Drive.
Do you know how they compare by any chance?

Well for one BeamNG is a glorified physics engine tech demo, so Wreckfest wins by default. Too many people I know Steam refunded that shit, avoid BeamNG.

I like the tech they've put together for this, but I'd be far more interested if it were being used for Rally Trophy 2.

Pretty much what EvaUnit said, yeah. The BeamNG cars have been modelled with each part* individually physics modelled. That combined with the softbody deformation makes for some really spectacular crashes, but it also means that having more than one car onscreen at a time might be a struggle for your computer, as all that stuff is really heavy to compute. There's not any gameplay to speak of either, so you might actually get more out looking at crash compilation videos on youtube than playing it. Get Wreckfest.
*not really, but a whole bunch of parts ok

OK, cheers. I was noting a certain absence of Game in there, from what I saw. Part of the calculation was also that, if I want to just hoon around and smash things up I can do that quite effectively (but not as prettily) in Rigs of Rods for free. So there's that.
When is Wreckfest supposed to be finished?

COME TO MY HOUSE AND DRINK SOME BEERS IS WHEN ITS FINISHED

Piggy will make games for beers! This is how it's done.
I was just going to add, if the physics of this game aren't technically as complex as Drive, they're preeeetty complex still (if not entirely realistic)
