It's like Canadians & Americans, only 300 years and we have a different English and French accent
Actually it's the English accent that has changed, apparently. American pronunciation of many words is actually closer to old Anglo-Saxon.

Most logs in D3 were there to provide you with neccesary information, not to set the mood. The fact the neccesary bit was always at the very end of the log was also pretty annoying.

In SS1, my least favorite log(s) belonged to Sabo Engle (one of the programmers' voices most likely, tired and expressionless), and that Wong guy (the "if we go to the source code wait what the f--" guy). What struck me as strange was that unlike the Von Braun, nobody on Citadel Station had anything but an American accent. Perhaps the dev team never thought about other ones, or maybe they didn't want to risk it. Well, go with what you know, that always sounds best.
My least favorite SS2 log-people were the obviously American voicers making clunky attempts at out-of-country accents. Delacroix, Bloome, etc. I make an exception for Korenchkin; his stereotypical accent was convincing enough by my ear to let slide. Although I love Terri Brosius' talent and hope to God she gets to pick up on another game someday as SHODAN, she is PAINFUL to listen to as Delacroix. Tommy is second on my list; I'm sure he'd sound passably authentic in moderation, but the level of Suarez I was exposed to throughout the game made me sick. And Nurse Bloome comes in third because even I as an American caught the awkward shifts in her character's accent. Thank goodness she didn't last long.

One of the log actors is the also the guy who plays the civilians in Thief 2. In Shipping And Receiving, he's the guy who goes "I've been lifting heavy crates all day, and I think my back's about to break" in this slurred and stilted voice. Whoever he is, he sounds like some intern they grabbed out of the hallway and put in the recording booth; no confidence and totally unconvincing.

I hate the guy who won the contest to be featured in the game, whatshisname, Norris? The fat neckbeard on the command deck.
"Itsh made ah wormsh. It even fahrs worrrrmsh."
There's no sense of timing in his one log where he racks the pistol.
"Iftheycallforme
(clk chk)Idon'tknowwhammagonnado"
Oh really. It seems like you have a VAUGE IDEA you're building on you fat fuck
Actually those are some of my favorite logs in the game.
All FPS have bad voice acting.

One more for Bronson:
Quote:
Malick:
blabla... I am full of the glory of the Many! Here comes Bronson...I am at peace... Good evening Bronson, have you come to...? BLAM!!BLAM!!Bronson:
Turn that damn thing off. When I heard this log I was relieved to find that there is someone but me who won't engage in smalltalk with people who have huge worms connecting their head and chest.
She goes slightly overboard with the mess hall massacre admittedly. :erg:

That's my favorite log, actually. Just the way you hear silence for a second, then Bronson with 'Turn that damn thing off...' seems really badass.

Speaking of Doom 3, I thought it was interesting how Ken Levine, when someone asked him about its use of audio logs, criticized them for not mixing ambient sounds into the background. Here's the quote from Wikpedia:
"It amazed me when I played Doom 3 that they didn't mix their recordings into the ambient space of the world. The people sound like they're in a recording booth."
Personally, I think he just has a case of sour grapes, as I would go as far as to say the average audio log in Doom 3 is of better quality than the average one in System Shock 2 (when it comes to voice-acting I mean, SS2 obviously has better, more memorable writing).

He's right though. I hated every log in Doom 3 except for the hell ones. The writing was bad, most of them were set before the incident happened so just involved some Joe Schmoe talking about what he had for lunch that day and yes there was no ambient sound which killed the atmosphere. Sure you could say they had better voice actors but all the professional polish in the world isn't going to make them interesting, atmoshperic or memorable.
When I first saw my mate playing Doom 3 I was excited that they had included audio logs but very disappointed when I actually started playing and listened to the things.

Doom3 had better voice actors???
Why do you think that? Because they all sounded so similarly? Because none of them put real drama in his voice? Because of "better actors" make really bad and boring logs?
I start to understand what made ID deliver such a crappy game with Doom3. Today's kids WANT crap!
