Which leads me to another, related question: how exactly did Canada end up with 50000 Canadians in Lebanon? I've been asking this question ever since I first saw the number quoted on the news, but nobody's been willing to even attempt to give me an answer.

To answer your question : There is, apparently, a tradition amongst the Lebanese immigrants living in Canada; they go on vacation in Lebanon each year. And this year blows more than others.
