I would normally step in here and mention that Israel waited until after the Palestinians fired upwards of 500 rockets into Jewish territories from Gaza since it was turned over last year. 500 fucking hundred. THEN they retaliated.
to which the standard argument is 'At what point are the Settlements going to be withdrawn from the west bank? which are there in Illegal occupation beyond the lands agreed under the 1967 Peace agreement.'

Well apparently the UK is going to get involved in this Lebanon mortal kombat with the sending of HMS Illustrious and HMS Bulwark to that area for "operations".
Now all we need is North Korea to start getting tetchy...
Oh shi.

Ah, shucks. I go up to Whidbey for a few days, and when I come back I learned that nuclear war is imminent.
Good thing I'm on the west coast! Oh, wait....

What would happen if nobody vetoed a U.N resolution? Would they officially wave their finger at a government? "Bad! Very bad! You ought to be ashamed!". This isn't purely rhetorical/joking, I don't know too much about what kind of power the U.N has in the absence of the U.S.
Well it certainly would be more power than what the UN currently has with US vetoing all its decisions.
What UN needs is to require at least two permanent Security Council members to vote against a resolution before it's vetoed. That should give 'em back the credibility US (and USSR, mind you) robbed from them.
In a nutshell:
If USA and Israel don't recognize the rights of Palestine people, why should the Palestinian government recognize the rights of Israel?

"operations"
Let's nip this melodrama in the bud before it turns into Gordon Brown firing his personal death ray from the flightdeck.
"Operations" in all probablity = Evacuating British citizens from Lebanon

I just learned that my next-door neighbors (who are Lebanese) went back over there before the trouble started. That would explain why their lawn hasn't been mowed in a while. What with the airport getting attacked and such, it might take them awhile to get back. I wonder if they're regretting not going on vacation sooner or too ticked/shaken to think about that sort of thing.

thoroughly harrowing
The USA needs to withdraw its unconditional support for Israel ASAP. Israel has lost the plot completely, and it knows it can keep getting away with murder so long as it's backed up by the biggest bollocks on the planet.
We invaded Iraq twice for less than what Israel is doing.
