(
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5127556.stm) Will someone please put it out?
I know this hasn't been posted, perhaps because Middle Eastern tension is no new thing, however... this situation is getting worse by the hourly update. Intensified missile attacks during the night. Israel cutting power to the Gaza. Maverick buzzing the Syrian president's house. The palestinians murdering a young settler. The rhetoric regarding US backing.
I can't see this going anywhere good as fast as it's going bad.

Yes - I was actually just about to start a thread on this, since the shit really does seem to be finally hitting the fan between these two.
All we need now is for the US to get involved.
Quote:
Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, of the governing Hamas party, criticised Washington for giving approval to the Israeli incursion.
Mr Haniya said Washington had "given the green light to aggression" and called on the United Nations to step in to prevent an escalation in violence.
A spokesman for US President George W Bush has said Israel has a right to defend itself and the lives of its citizens.
OOPS.

Can someone explain to me when "defending yourself" came to mean beating the living shit out of every last thing you can get your hands on?

Because freedom is being jeopardized by the advocates of TERROR, that's why!

Can we have another helping of hyperbole please? IIRC, Olmert is an unusual PM in that he did not have a military career prior to joining politics (like his former boss, Sharon). It is probable that he is capitalizing on the kidnapping of that IDF soldier to show Hamas (and the Israeli public) that he's got the nerves to dish out a beating, if necessary.

Then what about this?:
Quote:
An Israeli military spokeswoman said the army had not detected that any such rocket was fired, nor was there any report of such a weapon hitting Israel.
Personally, given Israel's previou response to 'terrorist attacks,' I find it hard to believe that they have any reason to deny that an attack occurred if it really did. I'm open to alternative explanations, though.

At least the Israelis care about their people and will do whatever it takes to protect them, which is a whole hell of a lot more than can be said of certain other peoples and governments in this world.

I think underlying attitudes need to be changed.
However I think Israel must restore the infrastructure it destroyed as soon as possible.

Is smashing up Infrastructure in the Gaza strip really necessary though?
Sometimes doing "whatever it takes" is going too far...
