You also could have just copied/pasted the last page into a new no-page-numbers word doc. That's usually my trick when I'm tired of dealing with Word 2007's unintuitive bullshit.

I already got busted for that suggestion, Starrfall. I tried to warn you, but kids these days...

I'm obviously too important to read other peoples replies!

I like Open Office, but just like Word, the pagination function was designed by someone who's never had to produce a document exceeding one page in length.

Could be you are right, but I've done docs up to 200 pages with footers, headers, and page numbers with no problem in OO. The new version 3+ is a bit easier to work with. But long docs have never caused me a problem with numbering or 2 sided printing.

Back to the original question: The reason just adding a section break doesn't work is because headers are linked by default. In other words, whatever you do in one section header affects all other section headers.
The solution: After adding the section break, double click on the header on the last page. You'll note the message Same as Previous on the header block. On the header ribbon (or toolbar, if you prefer non-MS language) near the middle, you'll see a buttonish thing that says Link to Previous. Click on that, the message disappears, and the header is now free to be changed to whatever you want.

Right, but jesus on a trampoline, it's ridiculous trying to set the pagination up - having to associate the page number with the page, trying to remove page numbers, etc. The last time I did a 200+ page doc in OO it just started skipping numbers and I couldn't figure out why. WHYWHY!!?? Nearly drove me crazy, and drove me back to Word.

that must have been one HELL of a problem. I would estimate that Word is responsible for taking up to one year off of my life in sheer fury and stress
