Who said I was "proud" of it, ffs? And you're right, I'm not a 19 year old male. Good guess. And again, you are right in saying that's it's better than having an obsession with candy or bread or kicking puppies...but it's also NOT WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. I swear, this thread is going to
DRIVE ME TO DRINK!!!!
page 3 godammit look what you made me doooooooooooooooooooo

There's a lot of bad info in this thread: No, soda doesn't dehydrate you, it just doesn't hydrate you as well as a comparable amount of water would (tied mostly to it's caffeine concentration). Alcohol is far worse on hydration levels, but that's even more complicated.
As far as LF's crusade, I think it's a bit silly. Yes the amount of water you actually NEED is fairly low. But there's a difference between how much you actually need, and how much is good for you.
And yes, maybe you do quickly reach a state of diminishing returns as far as how much water actually gives you health benefits.
But the amount of water that will actually HARM you? It's *ridiculously* high. So high that it's not worth worrying about except under extreme conditions or if you're ridiculously frail or sensitive for some reason.
Just as an example (arbitrary numbers ahoy): Suppose you only need 2 glasses of water to survive. You may not get any additional benefits above 6 total glasses of water over the course of the day. But there's a GIGANTIC range between 6 and 67.3 glasses where it doesn't do anything more than make you piss a little extra. It's decidedly NOT endangering anyone's health 99-44/100% of the time, unless you're elderly or infirm.
People go overboard, sure, but they go overboard into a range of "muh, whatever." This is such an instance where you're better off erring on the side of gluttony than restraint that it's not even funny.
Is it silly that people are slavish to this? Yeah. But it's so fucking harmless.

It was never a crusade, but it sure has gotten silly. So one of my pet peeves is trendy yuppies drinking water constantly. It's gotten all blown out of proportion here, with people misrepresenting my position--i.e., calling it my "crusade" and accusing me of being "proud" of basic activity--and other straw-man shit. When people argue with me, I dig in my heels and fight harder, to the point of ridiculousness. It's a fault of mine, but I see I share that fault with a couple of other people here in this thread.

If it can reassure you, I think we all understood what you meant. It's just that... we are people who love to have fun ! :ebil:
Of course, we can go on if you wish... I could, for example, lay some theories about why people with a bottle of water upset you. Now THAT would be an interesting thread ! :joke:

If it makes you feel better, I was using air quotes when I typed the word crusade.
And I'll have you know that trendy yuppies have real feelings, too. Those aren't water bottles, they're there to catch the tears they shed because you're being mean to them.

It's because I'm an intolerant boob, plain and simple. (Also maybe because *I* can't afford that fancy water, dammit!!! ;))

I'm just curious as to what this 'trend' is that you guys keep referring to. I don't think I know anyone besides a few weight-conscious women that drink bottled water, infact, I'm almost embarrased of it, I always go last at the vending machine when me and some freinds are getting something to drink because everyone I know drinks soda. Does this trend exist? or just not exist as much in younger people. No offense to the fatties:joke:

In my (appallingly limited) understanding of human physiology and metabolism, excess levels of sugar in the bloodstream cause the body to secrete water in an effort to flush the surplus out. I forget if the kidneys are the trigger or just the final stage, but I'm fairly certain that this is the mechanism. I know personally that high-fructose corn syrup or white sugar in a beverage cause an instant- and I mean
instant- thirst reaction. I get bad cottonmouth in less time than it took you to read this sentence.
note- I could have googled the above to be certain I had my facts right but decided to just do a naked bootleg and see what happens. Either way I expect it'll be a learning experience. :erg:
