13 yr old girl hangs herself after being called names on myspace(

jesus christ, i mean seriously, they didn't even mention if the girl mental issues, so I'm assuming she didn't. It's just so sad, what the hell could you do to stop this anyways?

To stop myspace users from dying? I don't understand.

In the end, I'm glad they're not prosecuting. If insulting people on the internet were criminal, most of this forum would have to be hauled off in chains.

Are you even familiar with this story? A good way to stop it from happening would be to not have adults (
http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/009605.html#009605) impersonate a friend, lie, and deliberately hound a depressed teenager into killing herself. How's that for a start?

As a start, it's absolutely miserably useless. How exactly are you planning on accomplishing the feat of getting people not to pretend to be different and/or flame people on the internet?
SubJeff on 4/12/2007 at 05:38
Come now, anyone who kills themselves over a flame on the internet has more problems than being the butt of an internet flame ffs.

They didn't prosecute because there wasn't a law on the books violated. But because of this case the legislature of that state is passing a law to make it a crime ... I don't know if it's a good law or not, depends on the language, but probably more potential for bad than good.

Yeah, it would be great to lay all the blame on internet people, but in cases like this, there are always some very serious troubles already existing.
And there's always a choice - if you don't like the community/clan/posse/friendship/whatever, you can leave. In fact, it's much easier in the internet than real life.
(Besides, if there's gonna be finger-pointing, it seems that her mom had at least as much to do with it.)

How was this not the end of the thread?
