I only used Exo for the last bit, fight to the C-C chamber at the following bit, having found it inside the NPP. Crossing long stretched of wilderness without the sprint ability would really grate on my nerves. Man did that thing get torn up though. I remember for the final trip to the NPP, the one where I knew I wasn't coming back I loaded up on ammo, health, grenades etc, and wore my tourist suit, with a backup SEVA brought along. I figured I would be doing a lot of fighting, and I had had a hard time getting out of the Brain Scorcher with a torn up suit before. Figured I'd wear the tourist suit as long as I could, then switch and ditch it when it got too chewed up to be any use, which turned out to be right outside the Sarcophogus. Turns out I needn't have bothered bringing along the extra protection, considering how frequent solid armour drops become in the end game.

Exo + (four 5% bulletproof cap artifacts) = 80% protection against bullets. There's nothing closer to being a panzer. After a while you already know where the radiation hotspots are, so the fact that it lacks environmental protection doesn't bother me that much. And who needs sprinting anyway? Once I get an Exo it's the other stalkers that should be running. Away from me ;)
Are there even four Mama's Beads in the whole game? Plus, it's hard to avoid radiation because there are some places where you just need to walk through it(Mostly stashes, first part of NPP is a killer) or it's hard to avoid(Red Forest). And I've been backtracking so much in this game that lack of running would literally kill me.
So I'd rather don my SEVA(Which looks much cooler anyway :p ) and just swap to Exo when you find it just before the second level of NPP which has no radiation or anomalies and dozens of enemies.

There are two Mama's Beads for sure, but you can find more, as long as you find information regarding the respective stashes. Fang's stash in Pripyat contains the enhanced Exoskeleton and one Mama's Beads artifact. And since version 1.0004, there's also a stash in the Wild Territories that contains a Mama's Beads. But even if you don't find these stashes, there are always Night Stars, which will also give you +5% bulletproof cap.
As for radiation hotspots, there's always Crystals and Urchins (yes, I'm constantly swapping artifacts in my belt while I play).

Well, errr, now comes the embarassing part I guess... I didn't know you could equip the artifacts untill the middle of Red Forest. :erm:
I always thought that they're usable like medkits etc. and the bonus is temporary. Because I never use such items in games, I didn't care much for them and I simply sold everything, including Mama's Beads.
When I realized what have I done when approaching Brain Scorcher... well it was too late to bother anyway... so I finished the game with no artifacts at all.

OK, mystery solved. When I got to the Bar I found Petrenko in the hall outside his office. He had been pushed out by a small mountain of weapons. It eventually took me an hour to clean up.( whew !)
The cause: My attempt to mod the game to get Wolf to accept a better weapon.
In the file M_Stalker.ltx is the following section:
[stalker_trader]:stalker
$spawn = "stalkers\stalker_trader" ; option for Level Editor
use_single_item_rule = off <--This is the important line
can_select_items =on; off
If you activate the use_single_item_rule for trader stalkers by setting it to ON, problems ensue. The stalker_trader in question will choose one weapon and drop the rest of his inventory on the ground. This happens EVERY time he comes online after loading. (really kills frame-rate.) On the up side, If you want a butt load of weapons... Well , you get the idea.
So in conclusion, not insanity, I jut sold them some bad LUA and they went on a wild trip.
