My internet service is a radio receiver picking up a signal from a nearby tower. A few weeks back they had problems from a power outage, and I could barely get on ever. It continued until I contacted them a couple of days ago, when they told me the problem was fixed last week. She suggested my router was mangled by the same outage.
I'm on the laptop right now with the internet plugged directly into it. I bought a new router. It's not a g router but an n. The sales guy says it's backwards compatible with my g adapter and the laptop. My 54mbps connection signal strength says excellent, so I know it sees a signal, but it still won't work. When I ask windows to diagnose the problem, my desktop with xp says to contact my ISP, the laptop with Vista says the DNS isn't there. But as I say, plugging directly into the laptop works fine. Unfortunately I can't plug directly into my desktop, because it has a wireless adapter and no plug in spot like a laptop.
Any ideas?

Can you turn off the N on the router so that you're just using wireless G? does that make any difference? I vaguely recall other's having an issue with their not-quite-backwardly-compatible routers.
Does your make and model have any issues if you google it?

At a wild stab here, one guess would be that its possible that the wifi channel that your router is using is saturated (being used my other wifi routers nearby) so you could try changing the channel and see how you do..

What security authentication mode do you have set up on the router for the wireless connection? If it's WEP (which isn't recommended) then I've known it to quite happily pretend to connect with an invalid password but not actually function. You can also have problems with XP if you don't have the latest service packs and are using WPA2 encryption or are using an old wireless card / driver.
What make and model of router do you have?

it's a d-link dir-601. the adapter is a wda-1320. There is no encryption. I live way out in the country with no nearby neighbours for 100's of feet. The laptop loses signal outside long before you get near anywhere else. The laptop is wifi certified. Both the desktop and the laptop find the signal no problem. Signal strength is excellent. Note though, that the g router which my IP assumes is broken also gives the same results.
I have internet right now plugged directly into the laptop, but not with a router. Odd mysitcal coincidence that this problem perfectly overlaps their tower problem.
She sent me a hotmail saying I may need to manually configure the router but there are so many questions to that I wouldn't know where to start.
I know if I changed my internet provider, they'd come out first day and not leave until I was set up. However, once they have you, there is no offer to drop by and take a look.

Just to confirm then. If you have your router connected with the internet port to your radio receiver and your laptop connected to one of the LAN ports you can't get reach the internet that way? If so, that at least eliminates WiFi problems.
Have you been through the router setup ((
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir601/Manual/dir601_manual_100.zip) see the manual here if you don't have it to hand)? According to the same manual on page 73, there's a useful status page. If you can set up your laptop / router / receiver to give the same problem and get to the status page then the information in the WAN section would be very useful for diagnosing things further.

It seems to be working now. My IP person gave me some info I needed and let me know which config to choose. I don't understand, because last time it was just take it out of the box and voila.
Oh well, for now it seems OK.
