Alright, I've gotten the game to run after jumping some hoops and so forth, but I come across a snag that I just cannot avoid...
Calling the dropship crashes the game back to desktop. No error message, no nothing, just wham, gone.
I've basically grown used to the idea of playing the game without sound by now too.
Any help?

Well the easy work-around is to never call the drop-ship. IIRC, you won't ever need to do this manually -- it won't come if the mission objectives are incomplete in any case, and once they are completed it comes for you automatically!

I'll try, although there's a training mission where they tell you to talk to the bloody thing.

Oh yes... that's okay, you'll see a button on the main menu to start a new game without the training missions. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine after that.

Are you playing with VDMSound? If no, try it. SolVBE may also help.

You people don't need to play around with vdmsound to get it to work with SS1, just visit its forum here in TTLG, they have it all figured out.
I don't know if you tested DOSBOX 0.61, but apparently it works with TerraNova. It is a DOS emulator for WinXP and non-Win OS's.
I apologize in advance if I'm repeating something you already know =)
