I think aguywhoplaystheif pretty much sums up everything that needs to be said about all these changes. But is there anything good, other than visuals and dx10 from vista?
Renzatic on 30/1/2007 at 07:14
There are alot of cool things going on with Vista. The explorer is much more intuitive and better laid out, and you have quicker access to all your neat OS features. Once you get used to it, you'll find Vista's interface is quite an improvement over XP (Besides not having placeable quickbars anymore...I really miss that).
But if you don't feel a flashier shell, aero glass, and DX10 is worth the $200 investment, then it's probably best you don't get Vista.

Agree 100% with you, Fett....

It's quite likely that I will be able to bag a free copy of Vista (Business / Ultimate) and if I do it will be straight on my computer, mainly because I am a huge nerd and I don't really use my PC much these days as I have sold my soul to Steve Jobs.
As for IE7 it's a step in the right direction. Not interface-wise, because that's pretty poor, but the IE7 rendering engine is leagues ahead of IE6 (and leagues behind Firefox, Opera and Safari) but it is still a massive improvement and quite a big relief to anyone who develops for t'Internet. Hopefully future versions of IE will continue this trend of improving standards support, although I don't expect miracles.

It's a real shame that the menu structure for IE7 sucks so damn bad, because as David said, the rendering engine is what web developers have been waiting for for 6 long years. If the interface puts people off upgrading then that's us a little bit fucked.
It also has a few tabbed browsing enhancements that I'd like to see appear in a browser I actually use (Firefox).

Just as David, I've sold my soul to Steve Jobs when I bought a MacBook a few months ago. I haven't really regretted my decision since, and it's scary how fast I've become one of those irritating Apple Evangelicals that I used to hate so much. Only last week, I tried to 'sell' a mac to a friend by showing the interface and some of the cool apps. I loved it when he asked about virus scanners and firewalls, and whether he could get those for a mac (as far as I know, they aren't needed - yet).
The main reason that I finally dared to switch was Parallels and Bootcamp, so I could run the neccesary windows apps. Oddly enough, I now hardly ever actually need to. I discovered to some surprise that most windows apps not only have a mac equivalent, but usually one with superior functions and interface. I actually BUY programs now, for some reason.
Anyways, it's stuff like this that make me happy about my decision. Sure, it could still 'backfire' if I eventually need to use windows regularly for certain jobs, and I definitely don't hate using windows now (I still like XP, on the whole), but in the end switching made my life easier.
Also, mac-only DEVONthink/DEVONagent are some of the coolest apps I've ever used. If you do a lot of academic researchy stuff, and if you happen to have a mac or consider getting one, check it out (

I'd still like to check out Vista though, because I'm very interested if and how the new interface works - I downloaded the Office beta and was pleasantly surprised.

It god damn well better do it. IE7 just looks like crap, runs like crap and as someone said in a post above...we don't need the changes, the older version of IE ran just fine. Those "geniuses" over at Microsoft must be smokin' something really good.
There are two types of people in this conversation, those with legitimate compliants (agwpt about visual changes), and then you.
You are the windows 98 user who complained about XP for 3 years while using windows 98 which was by far an inferior product.
Are you really claiming that IE7 is worse than IE6 or even IE's less than 6? How does it run like crap? Its faster than firefox (not that that matters that much), it browses the internet what the fuck more do you want. It browses as good as IE6, has nice tabs (albeit stolen from FF), I just dont get your problem with it since you refuse to give any real reason, luckily I understand what your problem is. You are a hater, you dislike new microsoft things for no good reason, to fit in you bitch about them and call it micro$hit or whatever and say "lol microsoft am i rite guyz?".
Older versions of IE ran just fine? You bitch about whats wrong with it (less secure, no tabs), then they come out with a new version thats better and you complain that its not as good as the old one? Im glad they (or no one else) cares what you think.
Either have a real complain or stfu about it, if your only problem is with where the buttons are I dont know that you can complain that much, it took me a whole of 4 minutes to get used to it, I dont know why they changed it either but its not the end of the world.
Microsoft pisses me off too but half the time they didnt even do anything when other people complain, if they did everything right you would still bitch about it.

And MS could have just told them to fuck off. What would they do then? Cut themselves out of 98% of the desktop market share? They'd have crawled back crying in under a week, begging for something reasonable.
As far as I understand, HD quality downgrade is a hardware thing. If you want to display high definition content all the hardware in the chain has to be capable of HDCP, from your drive to your system to your display.
Your display doesn't support it -> you don't get full quality. It sucks, but it's not MS' fault, blame Intel.

Its faster than firefox
Oddly I don't find this to be the case, unless you mean startup speed, but I'm told that's because Windows pre-loads half of IE anyway, is that right? :erg:
fett on 30/1/2007 at 15:41
No - it's not faster than Firefox, it fucks you up good if you run Norton Anti-virus (Missing components? How did that happen? I.Fucking E.7 is the only new thing I installed), they've obliterated any common sense means of finding toolbars, commonly used buttons are spread all over hell, and the tab system is confusing because there's no visible button to close individual tabs (how sleek! Fuckers...). Every fucking page I hit wants to install ActiveX controls. Then install the goddamned thing universally instead of on every fucking page.
Seriously.
Ever since XP, they seem to make the OS increasingly geared toward 13 year old girls, and now they're trying to look like a Mac without any of the common sense inherent to the Mac interface. I don't care if it looks like piss as long as it makes sense, but what we've got here is aesthetic over application. :nono: Hopefully it's not an indicator of Vista's direction.
Bill Gates is a great guy - the work he does with DATA is truly mind blowing - particularly the millions we wisely spends on the impoverished around the globe. But I don't know what's going through his head half the time when it comes to interfaces.
