XP went through a similar scenario when it first came out. People complained about slower game performance, hefty system requirements, and tons of driver issues. All that good crap that usually accompanies a new MS OS.
As it is, Vista was released in a much better state than XP. If you've got the ram, regular desktop usage is about as fast as it is in XP, and driver support is much better across the board. Overall though, Vista doesn't offer that many advantages over XP . Once DX10 kicks in gear you'll see more perks to the platform, but right now it's more a step over to the right somewhere than a true step forward.
In other words, it's pretty, it's slick, it does the job it's supposed to...but so does XP. Unless you're a big tech head and like having the latest toys, I don't see a reason in upgrading for another couple of years.
And the DRM thing. I doubt that's MS' fault as much as it was probably the tons of movie and record lobbyists breathing down their necks to put it in. I'm sure there'll be tons of ways to bypass it after Vista has been out for a few months, so I'm not too concerned about it.
But back then people were still complaining about crashes with the older version of Windows, and Windows XP never crashes, for me at least. The only benefit I see right now is Direct X 10, but that could be ported to XP couldn't it? Also does Vista delete your illegal music or movie files?
And I also agree that the new IE7 is horrible, I prefer not having to search through menus to find simple buttons.

It probably will be at some point. But right now DX10 is Vista's main selling point, so I doubt we'll see it on XP anytime soon.

Though I haven't bothered porting my illegal music and movie collection to my Vista drive, I've downloaded videoclips from Gametrailers and whatnot and haven't had any trouble viewing them. So unless retail Vista is super aggressive about checking licenses, I'm gonna say no, it doesn't.

I downloaded the latest IE 7 when it first came out and I bet that thing was on my PC for a whole 30 seconds before I deleted it. I won't even think about getting Vista until I know I can play all of my older DX games on it without any problems.
What a bunch of fucking pussies, do you expect your browser to get down on its knees and suck your dick?
Im not a fan of IE, but I use it and it works fine, cant think that I've had any problem with it other than it giving me an error on some javascript that FF2 let through.
My main annoyance with WMP11 is the fact that it randomly takes 100% of my cpu while gaming, wouldnt notice otherwise. At first I hated it, but after a little while it grew on me, certinly a nicer UI than winamp, I dont care what anyone says the winamp UI is just fucking shit, even if the program is good and takes less memory/cpu. WMP basically copied the search feature of winamp to the letter but it looks nice and works fine.

And MS could have just told them to fuck off. What would they do then? Cut themselves out of 98% of the desktop market share? They'd have crawled back crying in under a week, begging for something reasonable.

Is that not a feature of Windows Vista? What the hell am I paying for then?

I like IE 7 :(

That's because you worship Satan.
What turned me off to Vista was when I updated to IE 7.
You actually have to live without that nice bar thing at the very top (the one with file, edit, etc.) Horrible, horrible. And this wouldn't be a problem, but the new Internet Explorer is the new Windows Explorer.
They've put everything in weird new places. They've taken all the stuff out of the nice logical lists, and put them in this "user friendly" "most often used" mode, which started in XP with that default ass-pile of a Start menu.
I don't want my computer telling me what I use most often. Ever. If I want to get to certain things faster, I'll fucking put them there.
Here's the thing I hate most, and this has to do with ALL of life, not just computers. People changing things - just because. If you have a pressing problem, then find precisely what is need to correct it, and then change it to fix it.
There wasn't anything wrong with the file menu. There wasn't anything wrong with having 'Stop' and 'Refresh' right next to 'Forward' and 'Back'. Why would you move it? Now the Four most commonly used commands are now on all different sides of the screen.
Seriously, WTF?
It used to be simple. If you had something to do in Windows, 9 times out of 10, you start at the upper left-hand side of the screen. As commands get more obscure, you moved farther away from there. This principle was pretty much global for Windows, but with the new Explorer they've completely turned the thing over to chaos. All sorts of equally useful and common commands are now place on the left, the center, and the right of the screen. Important information is now in the middle, and the bottom.
If anything, it makes it even harder for all seven of the "new users" to figure it out. Now with even bigger monitors, with higher resolutions, and therefore with smaller icons, the problem has been far exacerbated.
Microsoft just doesn't seem to get this. There isn't a growth market for windows large enough to bother to mention. People who want to use a computer are already using one - and having all the commands tucked neatly at the upper left hand corner wasn't the thing keeping people away from computers.
EDIT: Actually, one more thing. Friendly icons. I hate that shit. I don't want friendly bezeled icons with friendly fucking colors. I want angry, ugly, english text.
Grrr. :grr:

It is. But M$ doesn't get that users like the feature with more lips and less teeth. Until they get off their ass and learn this, no one will use it.

It god damn well better do it. IE7 just looks like crap, runs like crap and as someone said in a post above...we don't need the changes, the older version of IE ran just fine. Those "geniuses" over at Microsoft must be smokin' something really good.

Well if you get Window Blinds from Stardock you can have a slick looking xp.The following is not a paid commercial advertisement.
You know the biggest question is whether current Microsoft joysticks will work with Vista or whether you will have to buy new ones like with xp:cheeky:
