Just managed to get a retail ultimate evaluation copy of Vista and I am quite impressed at this early stage.I installed it on a spare laptop that has 30 Gb hard drive 500 RAM and a celeron processor. Min specs!!
Net working is an absolute dream, tick VG
Browsing and download speed, big improvement.
Desk top management, turned it off!
Doesn't run COMODO firewall so relying on the widows one, we will see!
Overall look, very pretty.
So far so good. Although it's not as big as an improvement that xp was over 98.

It's fucking fast. I copied my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles straight from XP, so they still have all their histories, cookies, extensions and yet they are like lightning, even more so than normal.
Other than that everything is fine, bearing in mind I've only used it for one evening so far.
Documents & Settings, or whatever the folder the alias points to these days, is locked down so you have to tinker with the permissions to get access to it. For most people it will not be a problem, but I needed to put my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles there.

Flip 3D, a 3D kind of Alt-Tab is crap, at full size the edges are not aliased properly and it's kinda hard to read. It would have been much better if they'd gone the OSX route and shrunk the windows to fit.

So yeah, it's Windows.
I actually like Flip 3D, but yeah, with the proper hardware Vista is like greased lightning. I have an FX-60, 4 gigs RAM, 8800GTX and I either don't notice a difference between Vista and XP, or notice that Vista is faster.
The exception is F.E.A.R., which gets me an average 8FPS...I suspect this is either a F.E.A.R. compatibility issue or an issue with the 8800GTX drivers.

Almost definitely the drivers I'd say. ;)

It's a real shame that companies like Nvidia and Creative have been so slow with their Vista drivers. The thing has been finished for at least 3 months, with a near-final version available for much longer - and they're still not even close to releasing final drivers. What have they been DOING? For tiny, cash-strapped developers, I understand - but for the wealthy market-dominators, I can't.

nVidia are getting there though, now you can play Doom 3 (somewhat) with the most recent drivers. :o

I get Business (32-bit) free from the MSDNAA, but I already have XP x64 installed, so it won't let me choose the 'upgrade' button. While viable, I have very little interest in doing a clean install - it's a huge hassle to make sure I've got everything squared away.
So it's probably an idle hope, but would the cd-key for the 32-bit version work for the x64 version? I could probably borrow the DVD from my friend if it'd work.
I suspect for it to have a chance of working, my friend would have to have picked up Business x64?

The retail versions include both the 32bit and 64bit versions on one DVD and you select the one you wish to use at install.
The OEM versions do not include this functionality and the keys only work with the version on the DVD.
As for MSDNAA I would guess that if the install media / download does not include both 32 and 64 bit versions then the key would not work for the 64bit version.

Just saw this Apple news release:
Quote:
Apple warns iPod users against Vista....IPods could be damaged by Microsoft's new computer operating system, the company behind the popular digital music players has warned.
Apple, the long-standing rival of Bill Gates's Microsoft, is urging users not to upgrade their PCs to the Vista system until it comes up with a compatible version of the software that runs iPods. But Apple, which has sold 90 million iPods since 2001, says many users of the iconic portable music players have had problems when connecting them to PCs using Vista.
It claims some have found that songs bought on its iTunes Store will not play on the new system, and that other Vista users have even seen their iPods corrupted when they try to unplug them. The contacts and calendar functions on iPods are also said to be affected.
A statement on Apple's website reads: “iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP.
“Ejecting an iPod from the Windows System Tray using the Safely Remove Hardware feature may corrupt your iPod.”
Microsoft has already released a software update for Vista users so they can play their iTunes Store songs.
But Apple is still warning PC users not to use Vista until it can release a completely new version of the iTunes software.
Apple's website states: “Apple recommends that customers wait to upgrade Windows until after the next release of iTunes which will be available in the next few weeks.”

I also was curious if anyone saw in the link I posted where Gates said this about Apple and if that is actually true:

I mean, it's fascinating, maybe we shouldn't have showed so publicly the stuff we were doing, because we knew how long the new security base was going to take us to get done. Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine.
