I have 2 GBs of memory and I get the blue screen when returning from stand-by, with XP. It sucks.
And I'm not going to try remove a GB of my memory and see if it gets fixed...

Just turn off the box or let it run. Standby is for wussies.

I have
TOO MUCH RAM for Vista. Seriously.
Not a big enough :wtf: for that
That is seriously strange. Other than that, what's your view on the OS?

So it is both easy to have too little and too much RAM for Vista? I have the ideal amount, in that case. :o

I'm getting a three bears vibe from this RAM thing.

It's fucking fast. I copied my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles straight from XP, so they still have all their histories, cookies, extensions and yet they are like lightning, even more so than normal.
Other than that everything is fine, bearing in mind I've only used it for one evening so far.
Documents & Settings, or whatever the folder the alias points to these days, is locked down so you have to tinker with the permissions to get access to it. For most people it will not be a problem, but I needed to put my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles there.

I just finished (about 20 minutes ago) building a new computer for a friend and installed a copy of Vista on it that they purchased. It's fast, thankfully. Infact it doesn't feel any slower than XP at all, but that's on a brand new pc. It's ugly though, fucking ugly. Yeah you can manage to get the theme to a nice color, but the buttons still retain this ugly glossy plastic look that reminds me of jolly ranchers candy (and the color they light up in doest change I think). The text in the titlebar has a strange white glow behind it, if someone knows how to turn that off please fill me in. The icons don't do much for me either, and honestly it does seem like they've abandoned function for form in a few places. And their form sucks. I'm not happy at all with the ui, I don't like the places they've put things and I think it looks like crap. The controls for WMP are pretty hideous too (aesthetically). Here's to hoping someone hax up some custom themes real soon. Those are just personal nit picks, though, natch. As far as an OS goes it works fine, runs fun, etc. Haven't run it long enough to know how it handles new software or if it crashes much, though.

I have 3GB of RAM and I couldn't get my Wireless adapter to work and would get the occasional bluescreen referencing USBPORT.SYS.

I vaguely recall some USB host controllers can't DMA to above 2 GiB as they have a 31 bit DMA address register. You may find some different drivers from the motherboard chipset manufacturer that work better.
David on 5/2/2007 at 13:56
Yeah, it only happens with certain nVidia-based boards. It didn't cross my mind that it could be RAM related as it worked just fine in XP, including a fresh install I did to make sure my adapter wasn't broken.
There is a hotfix available for the 'sleep' problem which would probably fix my issue too, however it's one of those 'proove you need it' fixes from Microsoft so it's not really worth the hassle.
nVidia don't have any nForce 4 drivers for Vista yet, only beta drivers for Vista Beta2
Eh

Right now I'm seeing the XP --> Vista change like the IE6 --> IE7 upgrade; I won't bother to use Vista until SP1 or 2, but if it helps to rid my inbox of spam by cranking up security for the "average" user that's fine with me.
