Howdy folks, I find it hard to believe there's no thread here already about WV. I'm looking forward to trying it, but I'm very hesitant about getting it because I've heard only bad things about it. So far I've heard that it is very hard to upgrade, and performance in games can drop fairly large. What does everyone else think about WV? I don't see how they could improve on XP really, it works beautifully. Can we expect the same kind of positive changes that we saw from Windows 95 -> Windows XP ?

Well I don't know how many positive changes they can throw in it. I do know that the desktop gets a graphical upgrade and that the OS actually requires a pretty decent video card. I haven't heard about games being worse, although that might be true since WV is all gunho with DX10. I have heard that there are already people that can hack into it's security and that it will ship with security problems but that's always been an ever present problem with windows anyway.

This is what I saw, as you can see there is more than 10 fps drop in some cases. It doesn't make sense to me because all the background graphics should turn off like they do in XP when you play a fullscreen app correct? So it must be monitoring software to 'boost' security. Of course that's all my speculation. Although perhaps it's because those games aren't optimized for Vista?

I just bought the Ultimate Edition last week for $199. I thought it was a typo on the website, and was waiting for them to call and say it was a mistake, but it wasn't. Well, I got the OEM version from newegg.com. I'll keep it in the package til I build my next system. I may try it out on my current system, as I have a really good system backup software, and can return my system to the exact state it was in. Kinda like a snapshot. Try out acronis true image if that sounds good to you. Trial version is free. Works like a charm. I deleted my MBR and formatted the drive, and still restored the exact way my computer was. It's better than system restore.
As far as Windows Vista goes, I'm really hesitant to install it on my primary machine, but it's the only one that would work well with it. I know I wouldn't be able to play most of my old games like Thief on there. I have a hard enough time on XP with all the fixes. I can't imagine installing it on Vista. I've heard it's basically a nicer version of XP, with tons of DRM, which I'm scared of. Not because my media is illegal, but because I don't want to lose anything legit. And I don't have a DRM enabled TV card, so I don't know what it will do with my television tapings. Probably downsize the image to stamp sized.
I'm stoked for a new OS, but as always, there are teeth to cut. I stayed with Win98SE for about 3 years until XP had been in service.

I'm not touching that thing even with a bargepole for a few years. The whole 'I'm-gonna-DRM-your-ass' and the deliberate video degradation is not-at-all appealing to me. Also. Why should I trade a good version of XP I got for free for a shit version of Vista that I'll have to pay for.

I can see one good thing about the requirements of Vista, desktop manufacturers will now at least use decent graphics accelerators.

XP went through a similar scenario when it first came out. People complained about slower game performance, hefty system requirements, and tons of driver issues. All that good crap that usually accompanies a new MS OS.
As it is, Vista was released in a much better state than XP. If you've got the ram, regular desktop usage is about as fast as it is in XP, and driver support is much better across the board. Overall though, Vista doesn't offer that many advantages over XP . Once DX10 kicks in gear you'll see more perks to the platform, but right now it's more a step over to the right somewhere than a true step forward.
In other words, it's pretty, it's slick, it does the job it's supposed to...but so does XP. Unless you're a big tech head and like having the latest toys, I don't see a reason in upgrading for another couple of years.
And the DRM thing. I doubt that's MS' fault as much as it was probably the tons of movie and record lobbyists breathing down their necks to put it in. I'm sure there'll be tons of ways to bypass it after Vista has been out for a few months, so I'm not too concerned about it.

Anything new that Microsoft has come out with lately suxors the big donkey balls. I curse myself daily for updating to the new I.E.7 (which I *must* use with some online courses I'm taking. Kill me. Kill me now.), and the new WinMedia player (which I have to use for class videos). I can't express in the English language how terrible the new browser is - if it's any indication of the way MS is thinking about new apps or interface for Vista, it's time for me to get a Mac. And I'd rather castrate myself with a worn out cardboard nail file than use a Mac.
Yes. It's that bad.

I agree 100% with everything you said. (especially sucks with the online class aspect, I know how ya feel) so I doubt I'll touch Vista for at least a couple of years

I downloaded the latest IE 7 when it first came out and I bet that thing was on my PC for a whole 30 seconds before I deleted it. I won't even think about getting Vista until I know I can play all of my older DX games on it without any problems.
