There's already a way. Start menu (win7) or Start screen (win8), and start typing in the name of whatever you want to run.

Which, of course, completely undermines the point of having a GUI instead of a CLI.

To some extent, I guess. The gui's still handy for the top few applications used most often.

No it doesn't. It combines the advantages of a CLI while leveraging the perks of a GUI. If you've got tons of programs installed, isn't it easier just to hit the win key and type three letters to access it than it is slogging through nested menus or, yes, scrolling through multiple pages on the new start menu?
Just because you're using a GUI doesn't mean you shouldn't rely on the keyboard at all.

Start-->Programs-->Games takes me a lot less fucking time than typing in the the first few letters of a game's name (if I wanted to do that, I'd just use fucking Bash), especially once you disable the fucking default 400ms menu opening time. Plus, you know, it's nice being able to organize your fucking software and browse it within the fucking GUI like jesus fucking christ intended.
You're probably one of those people whose hard drive is a mess of unorganized shit because you just let everything install to default folders, ain't ya boy. *spits into spittoon* Christ, using a search box to launch programs, what the fuck is this a Mac.

Look at the fuckwit who needs pretty pictures to do anything on a goddamn computer! I'll tell you how to use a damn computer! You go to the fucking terminal (the ORIGINAL OS for people who know how to get things done), type...
for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libalpha/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libalpha\/include/\/include\/libalpha/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libbravo/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libbravo\/include/\/include\/libbravo/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libcharlie/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libcharlie\/include/\/include\/libcharlie/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libdelta/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libdelta\/include/\/include\/libdelta/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libecho/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libecho\/include/\/include\/libecho/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libfoxtrot/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libfoxtrot\/include/\/include\/libfoxtrot/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libgolf/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libgolf\/include/\/include\/libgolf/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libhotel/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libhotel\/include/\/include\/libhotel/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libindia/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libindia\/include/\/include\/libindia/’ $x; fi; done; for x in find . -name Makefile; do grep -e “-I\$.HOME./libjuliet/include” $x; if [ $? == 0 ]; then sed -i ‘s/\/libjuliet\/include/\/include\/libjuliet/’ $x; fi; done;
and BAM! I just did in 15 minutes what takes at least 8 clicks with a stupid useless luser mouse.
So why don't you shut the fuck up before I humble you with more of my command line-fu. :mad:

I agree but I also get where ZB is coming from.
If they are going to go with this gui they need to make it properly useable. One shouldn't have to touch the keyboard because that isn't the philosophy. I'm not say that the philosophy is correct, mind.
Has anyone worked out how to put links to Steam games, and not just to Steam, on the Start screen?

It's only easier if you have an eidetic memory and can instantly recall the name of every program you have installed. We mere mortals though, usually have to drill down through a few folders, or might not even know exactly what we're looking for, so need to browse around a bit.
I have to wonder if most of the Start menu haters are the people who just leave everything dumped into the All Programs root, resulting in a massive screen-filling mess, instead of putting forth the minimal effort to organize their Start menu into logical subfolders, like Games, System, Multimedia, etc.

I'm wondering right now whether I'm stupid, clever or whatever, because I very rarely get annoyed at the Win 7 start menu - mainly because I've got shortcuts for the stuff I use regularly. Is this something I shouldn't be doing? Is Windows slowed down by ~40 shortcut icons on the desktop?

No but it does look sloppy and ridiculous.
