Just recently my coputer has started to having blue screen errors at random times although mostly when im playing Thief, I have all of the latest drivers etc and the correct patches etc for Thief to run properly. When the blue screen appears it says its taking a dump and then everything reboots and asks me if i want to check for a solution to the crash which never results in anything . Where does the dump go and what do i need to decipher and/or analyzie it.

I had this happen to me once when going into game mode in Dromed2 (maybe its the screen res change). I have no idea what happens to the info though and, like you, checking for a resolution was a waste of time.

this is very likely a driver issue, whats the reponse from the BSOD, as this will give an indication as to whats caused it ...

Thanks for the klink Ladron
It appears that the following are causing problems at different times
six times this one has caused a blue screen crash- ntkrnlpa.exe
and twice - atikmdag.sys
both say KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
so now all is as clear as mud
what do these files do and does anyone have an idea of how to fix the problem?

Hmm same driver as me on my 5870..
* what are you current idle and load temps..?
* what is the exact make and model of your car - I ask because some 4870 come with custom coolers and can have poor cooling and/or the fan control hasn't be done correctly and needs to be fixed my flashing a modded bios.
* And lastly if it is a driver corruption then completely uninstall the ati driver, reboot and then run 'nasty file remover' to clear up any remaining files, reboot, see if you get any BSODs.

The card is a HIS HD 4870 IceQ 4+ Turbo 512MB (256bit) GDDR5 PCIe and idle temp is 55deg C
and load temp gets up to 66deg C the fan speed idles at about %45 and rarely powers up from that except when reading objectives or maps etc
I have removed the old drivers and unistalled catalyst completely, ran NFR before and after reboot to be sure, redownloaded catalyst 10.2 and reinstalled it. I have noticed that in the system information window there is one more file listed as loaded but not sre which one, I will see what happens and keep you posted

Ah sweet, the cooler on all HIS cards are always very good, in fact most of the coolers are made for HIS by Artic Cooling - as in silent and runs much cooler than stock oem cooler.
When we find the source of you bsod, if you interested we can look at lowering the idle temp but this will require some software skills on your part..
