What gets me:
common messageboard post circa 2001 - 2004:
Quote:
anybody who uses Windows XP professional knows thats an oxymoron. Windows 2000 is where its at.
I remember the common feeling was the XP was "windows for asshats" and it was buggy and awful and nothing worked properly.
Fastforward 2007

Windows vista is an unoptimised POS that sucky sucky suck sucks! As soon as I have the chance i'm going to up(down)grade to XP
history repeats itself.
when windows 8 comes out. it will be a flying piece of horsecrap. and everybody will be swearing that they'll never leave windows 7. And many of us will be holding on to our winXPpro legacy machines for legacy apps.
Personally my adoption progression went as follows:
Dos 3.21
Dos 5.0
Windows 98se
Windows ME (i don't care what anybody says it was much more stable than 2000 pro. at least for me and I used both)
XP pro
and now Vista Home Premium.
Vista works great. I don't see the point in complaining about how older programs aren't working on it. Most programs written in the last 2 years run flawlessly in vista, If you're going to hold on to your 5 year old apps, then run them on a 5 year old machine, dont complain that your legacy apps don't work on a new machine, you get new hardware and software for the purpose of running more new software yes? So sure. keep your XP box if you're not planning on upgrading your software, because old software,
regardless of OS, has had problems running on newer platforms. Thats just my 2 cents about it anyway. I can complain with the best of internet forum shutins, but I tend to take a more pragmatic approach to it over an emotional one.
I havent tried the beta yet just because im lazy and I hate installing OS's on OEM machines, because they suck. But they're cheap.. so i've got one.

I'd rather shove a pineapple up my urethra than ever use Vista for any reason ever. I don't care if my PC is brand new- if Vista is on there I'm uninstalling that shit and putting XP on. XP is the 2nd best OS I've ever used (after 98SE), and the fact that it's still in widespread use well into the late 00s proves that despite its issues it's still a versatile OS where shit works.

I have to say that in the last six months I have literally never come across a situation in vista where shit doesn't work. I don't see how it is better than XP. but at the time they were the same price price so what the fuck. These days, its ok. Doesn't seem worth damning yourself to eternal gimpetude for actually arguing over OSes for.

In my first week with Vista I ran into five or six major problems; most of them had to do with UAC. And as far as that goes, Windows 7 is a lot less invasive. You can actually turn it off, and even though it doesn't completely turn off I can actually access system files (with vista the permission settings wouldn't even let me -- I suspect it's a conflict with my CPU's built-insecurity features).
Once I finally got all that sorted out, Vista was alright, but it didn't really do anything that justified an upgrade. At least 7 has more interface improvements.

My biggest problem with Vista is that it feels overly crowded and slow. There was some stuff I liked there, but even after goofing around with it a bit, I've never been able to make it feel quite right.
Now 7, while not being vastly different, cleaned up the stuff I didn't like about Vista, added the lovable bastard fuckchild of the taskbar, quick launch, and dock that is the Superbar, and basically made everything all snazzy and fast like. The fact I can scootch around and get to stuff faster in 7 without relying on shortcuts like in XP is a testament to how well the UI is laid out. It's good stuff, and the reason why I want to buy the thing when it comes out.
Now if MS will ape just a little more Expose from OSX, I'll be really happy.
Volitions Advocate on 30/1/2009 at 01:48
I'm not saying any specific OS is no good.
I'm just saying that it SHOULD be logical to assume that (and i'm just using these as examples, not real facts or anything) Adobe [whatever] 6.0 would have trouble working in vista. and CS 4 would have trouble working in ME or XP.
and that if you want to upgrade software, you shouldn't complain about having to upgrade to the OS it was optimised for, and also that you shouldn't complain about how a bit of software optimised for an older os doesn't work so well in a new one.
98s/e is awesome, I can play Mechwarrior 2 on it, I can't on my vista machine but I can live with that.
Also. I'd rather move to a mac than shove a pineapple up my urethra.

As long as it's optional, that's fine.
I fucking loathe Expose. I move the cursor to one corner, all the widgets that I'd never use pop up. Move the cursor to another corner, the screensaver activates. I just love disabling all that shit whenever I use OSX, of course it angers the person who owns the computer, but they're Mac loving tards so their opinion doesn't mean shit to me.

That sounds more like both you and your friends never tweaked Expose to do anything useful. For a simple example, being able to slam your cursor down to the bottom right and have it organize all your windows, then moving it to the top right and have it show the desktop is about damn nifty. It's something I use all the time when I'm playing with OSX, and I'd sure as hell use it in 7 if I had the option to do so.

Indeed I find this much more useful than Alt-Tab, either the XP-classic or Aero styles.

http://www.ttlg.com/dave/expose_sm.jpgI've been playing with Windows 7 in a VM at work, and it is much better than Vista, however it does feel like it should have been Vista SP2 or 3. I can see why Microsoft decided on a whole new OS brand after the Vista brand suffered so very, very much.

I am anxious to put this sucker on the shiny new PC I am getting this summer. Sounds good.
