Considering there isn't a Big Dork Hoedown subforum around here besides the troubleshooting areas, I figured this was as good a place to post this as any.
Well, I've got a Windows 7 beta key, I'm currently backing up my 3D stuff and the really good porn I don't want to lose, and I'm girding up to make the big pluge. I'll post up first impressions, and maybe get an extended dialogue going if it turns out fairly decent.
So, any one else get in?

Not yet. I'm hoping this one is a little friendlier with old games, but I'm not counting on it.

I heard something regarding backing up mp3s and making them read only before you install or something because it can corrupt them?

My n key sticks for a reason. :thumb:
From what I've read, 7 is just a leaner, cleaned up Vista. So if you had trouble running something on Vista, don't expect it to suddenly work perfectly now. Still, I'll give em a test run to see what it does. I haven't used Vista since the release candidates back in the day, so I'll need some suggestions on what to try.

That has something to do with the new media player, I think. It shaves the first 5 seconds off a song when you first convert them or some such bullshit. I think it only effects MP3s, though. Since I've already got everything backed up, and most of my songs are m4a or p, I ain't too worried either way.

Yeah, was just throwing it out there for anyone who might be foolish enough to try the beta without backing up.

I guess the Mojave idea worked so well they decided to run with it.

Ah hell. Guess my brand new Windows 7 install doesn't like something in my computer.
When I first fire it up after a fresh install (which I've done twice now), it runs great. Memory usage is a good bit less than Vista, roughly a 100 meg more than XP under normal load. The thing does feel faster than Vista overall, no harddrive thrashing, everything fires up immediately, no excessive permission annoyances. This is the way Vista should've been when it first came out. Cept for it missing my NIC, things were all nice and fuzzy. Then I rebooted.
Right now it's thrashing the harddrive, doing...I dunno...something. Whatever it is, it even tries to do it in safe mode. So for now, I'm downstairs on the laptop trying to figure out what's what here. Don't even know if it properly installed the network card cuz I can't get into the device manager.
Oh well, it's a beta and all. Gotta expect these things.
