Going on the slow ring, huh? I'm on the cutting edge, with the new icons, and cleaned up UI.
...which flakes out on me on occasion. WOOO!
And you know, Metro/Modern apps aren't so bad when you can run them in a window. That was the thing that made Win8 so bad. The big start screen didn't bother me so much, but having two different types of apps that required two different sets of controls and two different ways to manage them was kinda janky to say the least. Win10 fixes that, and probably takes it a bit too far back in the direction of the desktop, because a lot of people are saying Win8 still offers up the better touchscreen experience, even with tablet mode/Continuum/whatever it's called.
I love the Metro interface on Windows Phone. And I love the Windows 7 interface on the desktop. But I don't like them together. Traditional clamshell laptops with touch screens running Win 8 are just the daftest thing. I think the concept of merging touch and traditional mouse/keyboard interfaces together only makes sense for hybrid devices like the Surface Pro.

Probably the same reason they pulled support for XP when they realised their newer operating systems weren't moving units the way they wanted. As a developer friend of mine once said "Windows' biggest competitor is Windows". XP was a great OS after the SPs went in, so Vista tanked and even the very decent W7 dragged it heels. My guess is that W7 is stealing sales from 8/8.1 and they are worried it might eat into W10, which would be murder for their shareholders.
But they didn't pull support for XP. They actually
extended support beyond the originally planned end date and continued supporting XP all the way up to last year.
And surely giving away the upgrade results in fewer sales of Windows 10 not more, so they must think they will make up the revenue in some other way.

Ever notice how easy it was to shoot in Windows Hearts?

Yeah. One size definitely doesn't fit all when it comes to touch and kb/m interfaces. While they're the same fundamentally, one ends up being too small and cramped on one interface, or gives you a bunch of wasted space in the other.
Though I do think MS might be on the cusp of something with their universal apps. The way the interface reconfigures itself the larger the window is onscreen is kind of brilliant, since it allows developers to make apps for all kinds of interfaces, without having to make two separate apps, or sacrifice any usability.
We just have to wait for people to start making stuff using it. It won't be worth a damn otherwise.

At first I thought this might be some kind of scam, but after having read that the offer is for real I'm somewhat more reassured. I think. Thoughts, please?
Hi Dia, it's legit...This is a promotional strategy from Microsoft, for the purpose of selling future extended services offered in optional Windows 10 updates.

One of my concerns is how compatible the games I've been playing will be with Windows 10, though.
Not to worry, you'll be able to run all of your games that run in Windows 7...also, unlike Windows 7 (or 8), with the desired ability to reap the benefits from the upcoming DirectX 12 games and virtual experiences.
I highly recommend that you upgrade to Windows 10.

Rumour is that Windows 10 is also going to be the "final" Windows, and it's just going to be updated via Windows Update from here on out (much like how OS X works, I guess).

Going from Windows 7 to 8.1, I never once ran into issues or annoyances due to the interface. I found the transition very smooth and unproblematic. They can still screw things up, but by and large I'm not worried about Win 10.

I'm currently using Windows 7 SP1, and was interested in reserving a spot for it but I don't get the notification icon to sign up for it. Otherwise I'd have done so. Everything in my PC is good enough to run Windows 10 fine. Very odd.
I've read that if your one who looks to use torrents / illegal installations of various games and/or programs that you'd be much better off with Win 7 or Win 8.1 since Microsoft does far more monitoring of what you do on your PC in Windows 10. Any truth to that?

So what happens to your old serial key for your current Windows installation?
Is is permanently disabled? What if I don't like Windows 10 and want to downgrade?

Apple has been
distributing its operating systems via download for the last several years, as a result of their abandonment of shiny discs. But the change of distribution method hasn't affected the release schedule/strategy. They're still putting out a major release every 1-2 years, and the updates they put out in between major releases are generally bug fixes and security fixes.
If Windows 10 is really going to be last major Windows release, with only rolling updates to follow, I can't see enterprise IT departments getting behind that. I'm in an IT-related field and the last place I want to be is on Microsoft's bleeding edge.
